Anyone who has fought their way up Toller Lane at rush hour will be astonished by the lack of traffic on this picture from the CH Wood collection, taken in 1965.
Coming from the right of the picture, Toller Lane meets the odd-shaped traffic island which is now the site of the large roundabout, with Duckworth Lane going off to the left and Toller Lane continuing ahead.
At the top of the picture can be seen some well-tended allotments, and the clarity of the shadows cast by the trees in the avenue just above the old Toller Lane police station that sits at the centre of the photograph, suggests a clear, sunny day.
That avenue is Mannheim Road, which was the birthplace of internationally-renowned playwright JB Priestley, and at the bottom right of the picture is Whitby Road. At the top of this street, two cinemas faced each other – the Elite and the Coliseum.
