Thornton in 1969

The viaduct, which formerly carried the railway line from Bradford to Keighley, draws the eye in this C H Wood aerial photograph of Thornton, from 1969.

The village – possibly Bradford’s coldest satellite area – boasts one of the world’s best-known literary birthplaces, that of the younger Brontes.

The main road from Bradford runs up the centre of the photograph. Market Street, including the Bronte sisters’ birthplace, runs parallel with it.

Thornton retains its separate identity despite the old village now being virtually linked to Bradford by the housing built in the last century.
