Clayton’s 19th century transformation from rural hamlet to mill village is evident in the foreground of this photograph, taken by CH Wood in 1966.
The extensive mill buildings are flanked by rows of terrace cottages, most of which remain to this day – as does the neat park on the left of the picture.
What has changed, though, is the extensive greenery which in that year still separated the pockets of new development.
Many of the fields and allotments have gone as the 20th century spilled over into the 21st, to be filled with new homes as Clayton, like so many other villages around Bradford, has struggled to prevent its village identity from being lost to suburbia.
Thanks to a strong sense of community and a lively local history society, the place is succeeding in keeping the spirit of its past alive.
