8:43am Thursday 29th January 2009

Those who lived their life in Bradford 40 years or so ago might never have even known about this ‘advertisement’ for the city on top of the gasholder at the Birkshall Gasworks near Sticker Lane, Laisterdyke.

Toller Lane in 1965

The Duckworth Lane area in 1965

7:56am Thursday 22nd January 2009

Anyone who has fought their way up Toller Lane at rush hour will be astonished by the lack of traffic on this picture from the CH Wood collection, taken in 1965.

Thornton from the air

Bradford city centre 1966

Lower Grange, 1967

Allerton from the air in 1967

10:40am Thursday 11th December 2008

The houses and flats of the Lower Grange estate were steadily being created in the open space to the south of Allerton, making a marked contrast with the terrace cottages and mills of the old village, in this aerial picture taken by C H Wood in 1967. With its neat roads and houses, the estate looks more like an architects’ model than the real thing – an impression reinforced by the relative absence of vehicles.

Pollard Park in 1977

Pollard Park in 1977

5:34pm Thursday 27th November 2008

Pollard Park was all fresh and new and still under construction when a Telegraph & Argus photographer took this aerial shot of the city in 1977. The recently-created Greenway footpath/ cycleway snakes past the houses to cross New Otley Road via a footbridge and ends at Otley Road itself, near blocks of flats which have only lately been demolished. Carlton Bolling College (then merely a ‘School’) stands between the playing fields on its left and Undercliffe Cemetery to the right of the picture.
