Regarding the query last week from John C Taylor over Hockney Road, and whether it was named for artist David, we have had replies.
Geoff Dowling, of Bradford, writes: “The road is named after Paul Hockney, who was Lord Mayor of Bradford in 1977. He was a ‘livewire’ local politician and Liberal councillor for Idle. He is the elder brother of David Hockney. Hockney Road was the entrance to a new-fangled (at that time) mini-industrial estate, Bradford being being regarded as a ‘go-ahead’ city at that time.
“His tenure of office coincided with the Silver Jubilee of the Queen. Whether the honour of road-naming was for the former or the latter, or possibly both, I couldn’t say.
“Councillor Hockney at that time was also a prime mover in the the Twin Town Association, and in September of that year visited Roubaix for a twin-town conference.”
And regular correspondent Derek Mozley adds: “I think Mr Taylor has a point here. It should be either David Hockney or Paul Hockney, his elder brother, who was Lord Mayor of Bradford during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year (1977).”
l Sharon Fisher e-mailed with regards to the item headlined “Tar factory blast puzzle” (Remember When? January 16), in which David Miles asked for more information. Sharon writes: “Mr Miles mentions walking past this building with another person (Bernard). This is my dad.” We will pass on the information.
