When will the ‘town’ be a ‘city’?

John C Taylor, of the Aire Valley, responds to a recent letter in the T&A discussing the fact that some people still call the seat of the local authority “the Town Hall”, despite Bradford being a city.

He says: “Growing up in Allerton in the 1960s, people I knew would say that they were ‘going into town’, meaning going shopping in Bradford city centre.

“Will the use of town for city eventually die out in Bradford? Compared to London or Birmingham, isn’t Bradford more the size of a town? Furthermore, is the use of town to mean city linked to which generation you belong to? Are there any primary school kids out there who only use the word city?”
