Following the death of Keighley-born actress Mollie Sugden, from a correspondent who wishes to remain nameless: “I doubt very much if many people knew that Mollie Sugden was called up during the war for service to her country.
“It was in 1942, and a group of girls in their early twenties or late teens were sent to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Steeton, near Keighley, with a promise of feeding massive machines, 12-hour shifts, day and night.
“As your name was called the next machine was yours. At the end, Mollie Sugden’s name was called out and then taken away. We were later told she had been transferred to join ENSA – The Entertainments National Service Association.
“Now, sadly, I keep reading of the passing away of some of these people, just as Mollie has done now. But we can always keep bragging that we knew Mollie Sugden during the war, even for a day, for she looked the same even when she appeared years later on the telly.”
