And on a different topic from Derek Mozley, this time regarding our piece on the writer Malachi Whitaker last week: “Regarding her son Michael, he was a contemporary of mine at Bradford Grammar School and later became the general manager of Bradford University about the time Harold Wilson was Chancellor.

“One interesting residence [The Whitakers had] was Bolton Old Hall (now in Bolton Villas, Bradford). Dating from 1627, it is quite possible that Cromwell stayed there and, before the Whitakers’ brief occupancy just after the Second World War, it was the home of the Sharpes – son Philip was to become a renowned cricketer for Worksop College, Yorkshire and England and, later, Test selection.”
