The first of two missives from Derek Mozley, of Shipley, in response to a piece on June 5: “Re Mr Harragan’s letter about South African Test Cricketer A E E Vogler, the South African touring side in 1924 was possibly one of their weakest ever sent to this country.

“Consequently, their performance was not outstanding, a situation compounded by that summer being one of the wettest of the 20th century.

“Even so, they appear not to have called upon Vogler’s services, assuming he was available. In fact, they had already recruited another South African, G M Parker, from the Bradford League, who played in the first two Tests.

“C P Carter actually played in the final three Tests with moderate success. If Vogler was ever considered it certainly was not mentioned in Wisden’s Almanack (1925). Yorkshire played South Africa at Bradford on July 2,3 and 4 that year. Vogler could have been present on this occasion, not merely as a spectator but also in the touring side’s dressing room, so there would have been a good opportunity for the manager to approach him.”
