25 years ago: Bradford Council chiefs announced a unique deal, the first of its kind in the country, to hand over responsibility for paying supply teachers' wages to a major insurance company, Municipal Mutual, with the firm picking up the bill to replace any teachers off work sick.

50 years ago: The number of calls made to Bradford fire brigade increased from 903 to 1,227 in the year to the end of March, but the number of fatalities as a result of fires fell from 13 to five, with the number of "serious" fires also dropping from 12 to ten.
