Telegraph & Argus Thursday August 8, 1963:
THE biggest and most daring train robbery ever carried out in Britain took place at Sears Crossing, near Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. According to the Telegraph & Argus, an armed gang of between 20 and 30 masked men had tricked a mail train into stopping and calmly escaped with £2.6 million (approx. £48 million in today’s money) in one of the most famous heists in history. The 15-strong gang of robbers which included Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson and Ronnie Briggs then hid out in an old farmhouse in Oakley Buckinghamshire, which had been rented so the gang could share out the money. They even played Monopoly using the real dosh.
