O'Brien frustrated by penalty ruling

7:00am Monday 5th January 2009

Luke O’Brien is convinced he should have had the penalty that would have lifted City back into the top two.

The in-form left back appeared to be flattened by Shrewsbury midfielder Chris Humphrey as he charged into the area during Saturday’s 0-0 clash.

But referee Russell Booth stunned Valley Parade by waving away the home appeals.

That proved a key moment as Shrewsbury hung on for a point – and O’Brien felt they got away with it.

He said: “As I picked the ball up, I was looking to shoot but it was just stuck under my feet. When I finally managed to get it out and take a touch, the right back came in from one side and the midfielder took me from behind.

“I just went head first – but the referee said I didn’t have control of the ball. I think everyone else saw it was a penalty.

“It’s frustrating because that’s the best we’ve played at home for a while. We were straight at them from the first couple of minutes and I don’t think Shrewsbury had a shot first half.

“If we’d got the first goal, it would have been just like last Sunday against Morecambe and we’d have been at them all the time.

“But we proved a point because we were the better side. It’s still tight up there in the top three and play-off area but we showed them we’re a good team.”

Barry Conlon smashed against the post with a spectacular volley and Michael Boulding also missed a good chance as City were held to their third goalless draw in four outings.

They have now gone six hours without conceding a goal – the first time City have bagged four clean sheets in a row since 1988.

O’Brien said: “I know it’s been a long while since we had four on the bounce so we’re all happy with that. As a defender, that’s a big part of your job.

“The only disappointment is that we couldn’t turn the one point into three. But promotion has been our aim since the beginning of the season and that’s another point towards it.”

Stuart McCall today plans to nail down Nicky Law and Steve Jones.

The Burnley winger is likely to sign for another month – although the Clarets have the option to recall him straight away – while McCall hopes to persuade Sheffield United to allow Law out for the rest of the season.

City will have to cough up a bigger percentage of the midfielder’s wages but McCall is confident a deal can be struck.

He said: “Sheffield United have been fantastic with us regarding the amount of money we are paying Nicky. To keep him, I think we will have to pay a little bit more but I’m sure we can come to an agreement.

“No disrespect to Nicky, who is doing ever so well for us, but I don’t think he’d go back in their team. He got called back last year by Bryan Robson and never had a game.

“Sheffield United are going well at the moment and Nicky is enjoying his football here, so it suits everyone.”

Just want to say how important it is that McCall gets Nicky Law for the rest of the season. More important than any new signing; he is the key to City winning promotion.

The second most important signing is Omar Daley; Daley signing for any other team in world football would suit me! Please get rid. He failed to beat his marker once on Saturday; he had one shot on target and one excellent covering tackle. Apart from that, it is poor shots, poor passes, clueless when in space and totally absent from the game in the second half. McCall should have swapped him for Nix rather than taking Steve Jones out of the game by putting him on the left wing. Please get rid of Daley; please, please!!

Oh, and sign O'Brien on a five year contract; he is the best City player to come through the ranks since....O'Brien. Maybe our youth policy should be to only take on young kids called O'Brien.

I'm sorry, KnightMcCall, but I think that you are way off the mark regarding Omar Daley. Granted he had a quiet game on Saturday but that will always happen with a player like Daley; by his nature he will have games where he will shine followed by games where he hardly gets a kick. I think this season though, his good games have greatly outnumbered his quiet ones.
Also please bear in mind the conditions during Saturdays match. I was freezing wearing two pullovers and a thick coat, so I suspect that Jamaican Omar would have really found it difficult.

If its freezing and you are a soccer player the best idea is to run around or get off into a hot bath. Daley did neither and he was worse than useless. Why cannot SM see this. HE HAS A PLAYER WHO REALLY JUST DID NOT WANT TO BE ON THE PITCH FROM THE OUTSET BUT DID NOTHING ABOUT IT!!

I really do believe that we can be a better unit without Daley now:we have good competition for places and from players wanting to play and to work.

If we get a half decent offer let him go.

As regard Delph is a big club more or less likely to buy him for a fortune given that he has a drink drive offence coming up: the offence does not show him in a particular good light does it?

Hopefully someone with a few million will come along:BATES WILL NOT REFUSE THAT SORT OF MONEY.

As regards the penalty claims: get over it: it is done and dusted. we must get three points from each of the next two away games to make up for loss of points at home again.

“I just went head first – but the referee said I didn’t have control of the ball. I think everyone else saw it was a penalty. "

So, in the laws of the game, if you don't have control of a football, you can go around clattering everyone?

Maybe Rhys Evans should have clattered into Grant Holt whilst play was at the other end of the pitch under this refs rules!

tyker, midland road says...

and last seasom Lverpool were awarded a penalty against Sheffield United even though there was no contact: the referee stated afterwards he believed that the player had "intended to foul the opposition player": so , following this logic, the referee can award a penalty at any time for thinking that any player is thinking at any given time he is going to foul an opposition player.

Look at the Spurs penalty in the cup game: did the centre forward have control of the ball when the goal keeper tapped his ankle or was the ball even going towards goal.

in conclusions: all decisions are down to one thing:interpretation of the laws by the referee in charge of the game!!

and we can all discuss "interpretration" until the proverbial cow come home. TALKING OF WHICH--WHERE IS THE WIFE THIS MORNING!!!

It was a penalty and Boulding should have a pen too. However, as someone pointed out above, they should have been awarded one as well.

In relation to not having control of the ball, I can remember Deano having a run in with a keepr whilst the ball was in the centre-circle. The linesman saw the incident, play was stopped and we got a penalty. WINDASS WAS DEFINITELY NOT IN CONTROL OF THE BALL as it was about 40 yards away from him!

I do agree with KnightMcCall though regarding Daley. For a winger to have more shots than our strikers, less crosses than our left full-back and more times than not the ball ending up in the stands than in the net is poor. Admittedly, he is exciting when he runs with the ball. However, far too many times the end product is poor.

How come when his form this time last year was so poor, everyone wanted to have a go at him and his contract extension. He hasn't really improved this season (3 assists, 2 goals) and yet he is now the best thing since sliced bread. A superb tackle and one saved shot. What else did he manage? O'Brien showed more penetration in his running that Daley and his crosses were better too!

One final point. I did hear Hendrie talk about McCall's list of players, however, McCall himself said he didn't have any targets (at all) and that agents were constantly asking if he was looking for a particular type of player. McCall said he wasn't interested and was happy with his squad, especially as players were coming back from injury. He confirmed his priority was getting Law and Jones signed up.

Hendrie mentioned a list of three players, but where did he get that info from? Last week, Lawn said McCall was looking at three strikers and was hopeful of his main target agreeing to join us. That player was Chris O'Grady.

If Leeds sell Delph for big bucks and we get a £1m plus from the deal, then we might see a player or two joining us. However, if we don't get mega-cash, nobody else will be joining us (ACCORDING TO McCALL ANYWAY).

Waynus--good call on the penalty front.

However it may just be that if we did get a windfall from Delp and that we are still in the promotion hunt that in-coming transfer money may just be held back for strengthening teh team next season:if we did get promotion with this set of players we would struggle to survive soo strengthening the squad would be needed.

I agree to withhold any windfall like this would be a calculated risk:we may end up with the cash and no promotion!

however is it certain that there is going to be a windfall: would prefer we got shut of DALEY who generally this season has not been good enough but get's selected and use the cash and savings in wages to get a couple of youngsters in who are going to add to teh squad something different.

Bantam Dave

I like the way you form your argument; we clearly won't agree as I think I have only once thought that Daley has had a good game (although I have missed a few) but that good game was versus Luton and Daley was largely responsible for their equaliser. Still thought your response was very fair.

Daley clearly excites the crowd but what you are looking for is end product. Conlon is getting slated but there is 'some' end product with Conlon whether it is scoring the odd goal or creating the odd goal. However, with Daley it is simply the case that his pace allows us to anticipate that something might happen but sadly it rarely does. As other comments above suggest, his crossing is woefully poor, his shooting is as random as a pinball machine and he doesn't seem to have the football brain to make the right decision when he gets into space. With his pace, if he did have a footballing brain then he would be courted by Premier League clubs. End product is what we need and Daley just doesn't deliver, not with assists or goals.

As for Conlon, there is no doubt that there are better strikers in League Two but City cannot afford any of them. Conlon is our third choice striker and I don't think many teams have a better third choice than conlon (some teams don't have a first choice striker that is as good as Conlon). his work rate is usually very good, he can produce some excellent hold up play and he won countless headers on Saturday and several free-kicks in dangerous places. He is not Bobby Campbell but he is our Peter Crouch - not everyone cup of tea but a different option to Thorne, Boulding etc.

I agree entirely with your post (no you haven't mis-read my sentence) LOL.

There is no guarantee that we will get a wind-fall and even if we do, it may be that it could happen too close to the end of the window. If Leeds hold out until the end of January, we wouldn't have time to spend any of the money anyway. In addition, as McCall clearly said on Radio Leeds after the game, 'I am not looking at bringing any one else in. We have players now at the top of their game and other players coming back from injuries. If we can keep Law until the end of the season and Jones for another month, I can't see us making any further additions. Of course that isn't to say we would turn our back on a player that may become available, but he would have to improve our team'.

With that statement in mind, you could well be right in your suggestion that any money received from Delph may be kept over until next season.

I also agree with you regarding Daley. I do like him as he gives us an outlet and he is exciting, simply because he doesn't know where he or the ball is going so it keeps us on our feet. That said, if we were offered £200k plus for him, I wouldn't hesitate in accepting it.

why does every post end up in a debate about conlon??? In the past 100 posts it as been said that Conlon is absolutely terrible or some people ahve even said he is brilliant (them people have already been shipped off to the loony home)...can we just not agree that some people like hima dn some people think he's ok????

I do see daley as somebdywe could possibly make a few quid on hopefully..i think he is a ok player but half the player some people think him to be and the majority of scouts will see past his only attribute which is speed - we may aswell have Usain Bolt on the wing. Once he has 2 people on him he has no tricks up his sleeve to get past them so he becomes totally ineffective.

sec word is miss-much...i wonder if they knew i was writting about daley

see you agre with me about the striker scenario regarding Delph. I wunt get us hopes up on getting owt near a million. Lucky if the whole deal is worth 1.5 and thats top side. the guy is a diviion three player. yes he as potential but even l***ds cant decide where to play him. supoosed to be a striker but playing in midfield.

Having a pop at Daley after Sat is prob justified. But overall if given the correct instruction/guidance he is not a bad player really is he Wanus. And he is played on the left and instructed/forced to cut inside, thus negating some of the crossing chances. As for last season and poor form the name Baz springs to mind and he got another extension. Where you also complaining about Baz then or do you have favourites? Just a question so dont boil over.

Last season I said that if Conlon didn't get more goals then he shouldn't be offered a new contract. McCall was obviously not listening to me (LOL) as he did offer him a new 6 month contract and more recently a second 6 month contract and to be honest I believe he has deserved them.

I agree that by playing Daley on the left, we are weakening our chances of him crossing. That said, he played half an hour on Saturday on the right and still didn't manage one cross! In fact, he always has cut in regardless of which wing he plays on.

As for having a pop at him after Saturday, what about the Lincoln game. He was worse than useless then too. In fact, there have been quite a few times this season when he has been poor. Luckily for him, he clearly has a fan-club that just can't see his flaws.

Leeds have already rejected two £6m bids so I would anticipate him going for more than that sum. Even if he had been sold for £6m we would have collected £1.2m so I don't get your statement that 'we won't get owt near a million'. Can you clarify?

Instead of posting a comment claiming you can read, why don't you comment on any of the recent stories? LOL

For example, what is your feeling on the new loan signing, how do you feel Daley played or Conlon for that matter? What about Law, should we try to sign him or replace him in midfield with Furman? Should we have been given any penalties on Saturday and how do you think Clarke has been playing?

Come on fella get off that fence or your backside will end up with too many splinters.

Joining the Daley debate, I though he had a decent 1st half, but faded after the break, particularly when he was switched to the right wing.

One of the things that frustrates me about him is that he always seems to take that extra touch, instead of just taking on the full back. By doing this it allows the full back to get into position, and the wide midfield player to track back and provide cover, meaning there are often 2 men on him.

Sometimes though you've got to give credit to the opposition, I thought their right back was excellent, and looked a real quality player. He won the battle with Daley hands down, and this was probably the reason why Omar was switched to the right, to see if he could get any joy there.
