Eddie Johnson is poised to sign for hometown club Chester today - as long as another player leaves.

Johnson, released by City in the summer, has agreed personal terms with the League Two strugglers. But his move is dependent on Paul Rutherford joining non-league Northwich Victoria to free up room on the wage bill.

Johnson, who scored seven goals in 64 games for the Bantams, has spent most of the summer on trial at former club Crewe.

Chester are hoping to push the deal through in time for him to make his debut at home tomorrow against Barnet - a side he scored twice against last season, as well as an own goal.
