City throw themselves into pre-season action tonight with much-in-demand striker Michael Boulding set to get a runout.

Stuart McCall’s men face Farsley at Throstle Nest in the first of seven friendlies building up to the new campaign.

The City boss is likely to give everyone some game time – including Boulding, who is currently training with the Bantams as he continues to assess his options from the number of clubs chasing him.

His brother Rory, who also left Mansfield after their relegation, is with City at the moment as well and likely to feature in the game.

Goalkeeper Nick Colgan will play as he looks to earn a deal as City’s No 1 for the new season and travelling fans will also gain their first glimpse of signings Graeme Lee, Chris Brandon, Paul McLaren and Paul Arnison.

The Farsley game follows two weeks of hard toil on the training ground for the City squad and veteran hot-shot Peter Thorne is eager to get going.

“You’d think after all these years that pre-season would be a drag but I’m really looking forward to the games again,” he said.

“No matter what you’ve done on the training pitch, it’s nothing to when you go into the first game. You’re completely full on again.

“It’s everything from getting down to the ground, going through the same preparation you do during the season and making sure it all becomes second nature again.”

Thorne added: “We’ve done a hell of a lot of football this pre-season as well as the fitness work and the lads are looking really sharp.

“You can tell already that the touch is a lot better. Some of us don’t see a ball for two months in the summer because we get away from it completely so it’s good to get them out early.”

Thorne suffered in pre-season last year with a troublesome thigh injury which sparked the problems that plagued the first few months of his Valley Parade career.

Having finished the term with 15 goals from 33 starts he hopes to take that hot form into a full term.

Thorne said: “It was the games that got me fit and got me scoring again. I just wish I could have started off as fit as I felt during the second half of the season.

“People will expect me to keep scoring goals but that pressure is part and parcel of this game. That’s what I like about football.”

The game kicks off at 7.30pm and not as previously stated.

Michael Boulding may well be a good striker but so far, in my opinion, his attitude stinks. He's strung along City, not to mention several other clubs, for a number of weeks and now we find out it's because his brother is clutching on to his coat tails! It stinks of nepotism and, let's not forget, it could put the club over budget next season in terms of wages etc if we're forced into shelling out for a player we don't really want.

Despite that, I remain positive!

I posted something similar on another thread:

Does Boulding really know that he is operating at the thin end of the market where clubs are watching every penny:if he does not he is a fool.

Maybe though he thinks his brother is a better player than he actually is although I think it is more to do with cost savings on his part. From memory he and his brother either live together or near each other so trying to wangle a move to one club for the pair of them will split their travelling costs. Maybe the other clubs don't rate the brother!

Maybe we should be thinking along the BOGOF lines: if we want to buy one of you can we have the other for free--that way we get the two players on one wage? Do you reckon they will agree that.

Let's also not forget that both player's come with a reputation--- both played for a club relegated out of the league.

NOT GOOD ON ANY CV is it

McCALL beware: good things don't ALWAYS come in pairs!!

"if we're forced into shelling out for a player we don't really want" - surely we've seen enough of how the club operate these days to know that we won't be "forced" into signing anyone!

Michael has probably been told by his mum that he has got to have his brother with him wherever he goes and he's afraid of getting a clip around the ear when he gets home if he doesn't. Poor dear.

Let's be honest, if Boulding was all tha the would have been playing at a higher level than he has been during his career. It hasn't always been the tag along brother that has stopped him making moves to further his career, and with modern day footballers it won't be any sense of loyalty, so it leaves only one or two reasons. He either has a poor attitude around a football club, or his input into a team is not that great, I can't think of any other real reasons as to why this 'goal scoring' forward isn't plying his trade elsewhere.

Sorry, what I meant was that if McCall is still interested in signing Boulding, then it appears his brother (who could be a bit of a fifth wheel, Mansfield farmed him out on loan twice last year) has to be part of the deal. His brother Rory is the player I meant we could be 'forced' to sign.

Agree with the sentiments of those that question the attitude of Michael Boulding. This will he/won't he sign for us saga has been dragging on for ages.Stuart has said in the past that he only wants players who showed the passion & commitment to the cause that he did. Boulding is not doing himself any favours on that front at present. My message to him is simple - put your name to a contract within 7 days or do the decent thing & get lost! (taking your brother with you)

Think of it the other way too guys, it's a 'try before you buy' for both parties, if we just went out and bought Boulding on the back of his goals last year, and not on his attitude & hunger, then we could have made a mistake, he's not being hasty, nor are we, so it suits both sides, if after this week things haven't gone well then we move on. Personally I don't think his ability needs testing, but we'll get to see MUCH more of him than McGod did with some players he threw in last season. Not TOO sure about the brother scenario though, but the lads 19, so who knows? CTID

I read somewhere that Cheltenham are still favourites despite Boulding training with City. They are offering League 1 football, which is what the wandered craves.

Kory Nix played some of the game with his brother Kyle. I also note Rory Boulding came on as a substitute, yet his brother wasn't even on the bench. Has he already made his decision to sign for Chelmsford? Did he travel South tonight instead of having a run-out?

I also see Wayne Jacobs played a bit part. Where was Heckingbottom? I also see Lee & Clarke were not involved, but Wethers was. What is the point in that?

Milton Turner (on trial?) came on at right back. Where was the young lad released by Everton that we were supposed to be looking at?

Finally, I notice our new physio came on as left-winger. Why????

I thought the idea of these matches was to get some control back and to build up match fitness as well as getting used to each other. Jakes? Wethers? Cook? Can somebody explain these and the location of our other 'first team' players?

Where has Kory Nix come from anyway?
Is he possibly the reason Medley was allowed to leave? Is he a better young prospect?

Can someone who went to the match clear some of this stuff up?
I was considering driving over to Farsley this afternoon, glad I didn't as it looks like they were just having a bit of a mess about.
Wethers, Jakes and Cook? What's the point?

I'm off to Motherwell on the 26th so would assume that City will put a 'proper'team out then. Anything less is not being fair to the supporters who trek up there. The inclusion of Wethers & Jacobs for part of the Farsley game at least proves that we weren't taking this fixture too seriously.Though you can't read too much into friendlies I'd be worried if we lost them all -& so would the players

Clarke came on in second half. Brandon injured for another 3 to 4 days. Heckingbottom and Lee were in stand not changed. I was told yesterday that Boulding would only play if he had shaken off an injury. I asked Weathers where the lad from Everton was he said injured and when asked if he was staying his hand gesture sugested it was 50/50 but not likley.

From all the changes it suggested he did not want anyone playing much more then 45 mins each. Ainge played last 25 in centre of park. Treated as a practice match as oppossed to a friendly if there is a difference, i think there is.

Maybe McCall should look at some Farsley players lol..

On a serious note not too impressed by Arnison or O'Brien at full backs, but it is well too early jumping on the band wagon which I wont do. Colgan made no serious blunders but was far from convincing, but he must be really lacking match practice. From the result it suggests knowbody was great. Well that is my match report lol..

As long as it is right for the 1st game of the season I dont give a dam and I still trust in MCCall that it will be.
