Former Woodhouse Grove pupil Katie O'Brien is through to her first WTA Tour quarter-final.

She faces third seed Olga Govortsova (Belarus) in the Tashkent Open tomorrow after defeating Germany's Julia Schruff 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Anastasiya Yokomova (Belarus) 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

O'Brien, who was the last direct acceptance into the main draw, said: "I feel absolutely great. It is a huge bonus because it was a last-minute decision to come here and I am glad I decided to come."

The Beverley youngster double-faulted on match point when serving for it at 6-5 in the second set and went on to lose her serve but she kept her composure in the tie-break, taking it 7-1.
