Dewsbury and Hermits B double up
Dewsbury and Hermits B both completed a double mission in the two Bradford League cup competition finals.
Division One champions Dewsbury started favourites against Highdale A but, with Mick Stead in their side, Highdale were capable of an upset.
Stead won his opening two singles without dropping a game but Dewsbury led 3-2 as Richard Lightowler defeated Mark Rycroft and Paul McKrieth, while Tony Bottomley also overcame McKrieth.
The sixth set was to prove crucial as Rycroft needed to beat Darren Page and he led by a game and 9-5 but failed to take his opportunity, Page winning in five games to put the champions 4-2 up.
Stead completed an unbeaten evening by defeating Lightowler in a high-quality encounter and Rycroft levelled the match with a four-set win over Bottomley but Dewsbury completed their double quest when Page proved too strong for McKrieth in the final set.
Hermits B are the Division Two champions and they met Division Four winners and defending Tony Theobould Trophy holders Unity B.
Steve Worsman gave Unity a great start when beating Doug Bartal by ten points but Hermits produced a solid team performance.
Keith Powell and Andrew Rawnsley gave nothing away and Hermits won with a set to spare to complete their double.
The Bradford Closed Championships take place on Sunday, March 30 at the Girls' Grammar School on Squire Lane. Entries should be made to Rod Hullah.
