Hermits edge Drummonds for title

Drummonds missed out on the Division Five title by a whisker as the Bradford League season reached an exciting climax.

The top three teams were all in with a chance as they faced their final fixture. Laisterdyke B held a five-point advantage over rivals Hermits G and Drummonds and began the week as favourites - but they had to play Drummonds, while Hermits faced bottom-placed Baildon B.

Hermits duly dispatched Baildon 8-2 to move top, so Laisterdyke needed a draw against Drummonds to become champions while Drummonds required an 8-2 win to take the title or a 7-3 success would give them a play-off place.

Malcolm Fowler won all his singles for Drummonds and, with Stewart Varley and Geoff Coupe adding one each, they led 5-3. But Drummonds could only manage a 6-4 victory, meaning they had to settle for third place while Hermits were crowned champions by just a point.

Hermits B clinched the Division Two title with a 10-0 whitewash against Laisterdyke A to cap a remarkable sequence of success for two members of their squad.

Chris Town and Steve Golden have enjoyed four successive title-winning seasons since teaming up in Division Five in 2004.

In Division Six, Salem Meths and Hermits J were level in second place when they faced each other with a play-off place at stake.

Salem emerged victorious - with Colin Waddington unbeaten, Ronnie Wright winning two and Brian Hall one - and now play Fastbats G from Division Five, with promotion up for grabs.
