Several village galas defied the aftermath of recent deluges to provide a traditional backdrop for series of fell races last weekend.

Addingham Fell Race attracted 75 runners to a scenic course encompassing 1,000 feet of climbing over five miles and an ascent of Beamsley Beacon.

Bingley veteran Christopher Smale took the honours in 24min 56sec with 15 seconds to spare over Colin Walker (Pudsey & Bramley).

Ilkley Harrier Martin Archer passed team-mate Jack Wood on the descent to take third for the host club.

Holly Page (Calder Valley) set a winning of time of 28:24 in the female race, giving her a three-minute cushion over Kate Archer (Ilkley), with international junior Nichola Jackson (Preston) in third.

Bradley Chapman (Ilkley) was the first junior home in 17th place, with Michael Griffin of Wharfedale Harriers taking the first local prize in 22nd.

Baildon Runners hosted the Carnival Canter , offering a senior race and junior race-fun run over a separate courses across Baildon Moor.

The senior race took in 400 feet of climbing over 3.4 miles, including a boggy section either side of the climb to Hope Hill trig point.

Ben Crowther (Halifax), in good form on the fells recently, overcame a ten-second deficit at the summit with a strong descent, but was unable to capitalise during the final muddy stretches, missing out on victory by two seconds to local runner, Quentin Lewis (18min 10sec).

Shaun Wilkinson (Keighley) was third just over a minute later but was consoled with the M40 prize. Gordon Weight (Bingley) was first junior and fourth overall in 19:51.

In the female race Lucy Needham (Holmfirth) stopped a Baildon double with a winning time of 22:41, pushing Diana Campbell (23:54) into second for the host club. Bingley’s Becky Weight was third lady and first F40.

Over 30 youngsters of mixed ages took part in the junior event. Tilly Melechi (U13) from Ilkley Harriers was first back in 6:55, 11 seconds ahead of age-group rival, Abigail White (Bingley), who was third overall.

Jack Walton (U11) was second overall for Keighley & Craven.
