Bingley Harriers’ Sarah Jarvis starred in Saturday’s Wharfedale Marathon Events.

She knocked two minutes off her own record, winning the ladies’ half-marathon race by a massive ten-minute margin, in 97min 34sec.

Runners could elect to take on either the full or half (13-mile) distance, with both versions involving over 2,000ft of climbing, and the half including a seemingly endless ascent up the vertiginous Mastiles Lane at around mid-distance.

Dry conditions favoured fast times but the 480 runners had to face strong winds, particularly over the first four miles as they headed north from Grassington across the limestone landscape on the Dalesway footpath.

Jarvis’s performance earned her third overall as navigational errors wreaked havoc among some of the leading men. Her nearest female competitors were Claire Pearson (Skipton AC) and Rebecca Mon-Williams (Ilkley).

The male race saw a rare win for Quentin Lewis (Baildon). A time of 89min 17sec left Lewis five minutes clear of Marc Teasey (Bingley), with Steve Webb (Valley Striders) taking first over-45 in fourth place overall.

The 25-mile race saw Andrew Cottier (Dewsbury) win convincingly in 3hr 3min, ahead of Rob Furness (Horsforth) and Jez Hellewell (Ilkley), with Shaun Wilkinson (Keighley) fourth.

Scunthorpe’s Claire Howard won the female event in 3hr 35min in front of Sharon McDonald (Settle) and Holly Williams (Keighley).

The latest Bradford 5k ParkRun at Lister Park was won by Will Kerr (Saltaire) in 17min 47sec.

Pudsey Pacer Susan Ransome was first lady, setting a new course PB of 23min 10sec.

The district’s new five-month Adult Endurance Training programme – open to all-comers, including beginners – starts next week.

The course offers circuit-training and running sessions, training plans and theory workshops.

Eccleshill’s Sophie Withnall said: “It was just the boost I needed. To have access to such high-quality coaches was amazing. I have learnt so much and my race times improved hugely.”
