Tom Adams (Ilkley) and Jo Buckley (Bingley Harriers) shone over the Scottish borders while representing Yorkshire at Saturday’s Inter-Counties Fell Race.

The championship formed part of the Broughton Heights Hill Race.

In the men’s race, Adams was ninth overall and second counter for Yorkshire behind Leeds City’s Adam Osbourne (sixth), with Ben Mounsey (Calder Valley) completing the team in 11th.

Yorkshire missed out on the overall title by five points to a Greater Manchester threesome who all finished in the top ten and included Pudsey & Bramley’s Danny Hope (seventh) and Darren Kay (tenth).

In the ladies’ race, the Yorkshire team was third overall with Buckley’s sixth-place finish making her first counter.

She was well supported by Holmfirth’s Katie Walshaw, who finished eighth over the 10km course that included 700 metres of climbing.

Two days later, both Adams and Buckley defied tired legs to race again on Bank Holiday Monday alongside 270 runners at the Ilkley Trail Race.

Both were rewarded with victories, and Adams with a course record. Times of 39min 31sec and 45min 40sec respectively made light of a tough 6.9-mile route climbing from Ilkley Lido via Middleton Woods for an undulating loop over the moors above Wharfedale, before the plunge downhill to the finish.

Buckley left her rivals nearly two minutes behind, with Sue Brown second and Bingley’s Pauline Munro, third.

Greg Hull (Leeds City) added a third place to his recent win at Meanwood Valley, but was chased until the final mile by Quentin Lewis (Baildon).

Chris Loftus (Keighley) held off Tim Ashelford (Leeds-Bradford Triathlon) and Liam Dunne (Otley) for seventh.

The under-eights junior race was won by Keighley’s Fergus Knappy, while Alice Jones was first girl. The 11-13 age group drew 48 runners, with Keighley’s James Lund finishing first, 18 seconds ahead of Charlie Lowrie (Wharfedale).

Ilkley Harriers’ Lucy Williamson and Sarah Pickering tied for first in the girls’ race.
