Fisher storms to victory in Otley Ten Mile Road Race

Despite not including a Yorkshire Championship this year the Otley race attrac ted even more runners than expected with around 350 leaving the start outside the Civic Centre.

They took a route through Pool and Stainburn and fittingly with a member of the Emmerdale TV series cast in the race, Tony Audenshaw who plays Bob Hope, they passed the Emmerdale farm seen in the series for so many years.

Audenshaw, wearing the yellow vest of Stockport, found the going tough like most of the runners with steep climbs around Stainburn Bank and on the route back through Farnley and over Otley bridge to finish at the Rugby Club in Cross Green.

There were 125 runners who entered on the night, many having been attracted by the prize of a newly minted Roger Bannister commemorative coin in a presentation box.

None however could keep pace with Fisher not even his brother Dave who he had brought along for the race. While Ian recorded his sixth victory in this annual race Dave finished down in 118th place. Ian finished in 53.23 and led the Otley AC team to yet another team victory.

It seemed an age before the second placed runner, Neil Cayton also of Otley AC, came in. He finished in 57.51 and third placed Brian Hanley (Valley Striders) finished on 58.33.

Completing the winning Otley team of three was late entrant Duncan Burgess who was pushing it to get to the start but came in in 15th place. First lady home was Darlington's Alison Raw in 25th place overall and she was also the first Lady vet 40.

Neil Cayton again won the prize for the first local man while the prize for first local lady went to unattached runner Helen Dunford. The ladies' team prize went to the Ilkley Harriers trio of Alison Bennett (6th lady), Sally Milir (7th lady) and Elizabeth McCann (16th lady).

Ilkley Harriers

On Saturday Ilkley Harriers had two ladies running for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Championships at the Blisco Dash, a tough course over 5 miles with 2000' of climb and steep rocky descents.

Alison Eagle came flying in fifth in 51:42 and Helen Sedgwick 6th in 51:53 mins, helping the Yorkshire Ladies to second place behind Cumbria.

On Sunday Skipton AC staged the Skipton Tough 10, and four Harriers were out in this testing ten miler, especially testing as all four had also raced in the Otley 10 just a few days earlier. In very wet conditions first Harrier was Neil Chapman, 16th in 66:49. Martin Heath had a good result 82nd in 80:02; with Linda Wright 93rd and 8th lady in 83:42 and Amanda Parnaby 133rd in 98:34.

Two Ilkley junior harriers were competing in the 2.5k Skipton Fun Run, with Dan Roebuck having a good run finishing 5th and Simon Chapman only 20 seconds or so behind, finishing 7th.

Otley Athletic Club

FIVE members of Otley AC travelled to Masham for the Burn Valley Half Marathon. Billed as one of the most scenic races in England it is also one of the toughest with some serious hill climbs and these were made even more difficult by the strong headwind.

Otley performed admirably to clinch the overall team prize despite the absence of some of their more illustrious colleagues.

The race was won by Alasdair Tatham (Quakers) in 1hr 21min 3sec, with Otley's Howard Jeffrey eighth in 1-27.20, winning the first prize in the V45 category. He was ably supported by his brother Mick, who finished 16th in 1-29.25, and John Armitstead, 19th, in 1-30.51.

Completing the Otley prize-winning quartet was Tom Hannah, who managed 29th position with a time of 1-35.25. Don Buffham also completed the course in 2-08.12.
