Victoria Wilkinson smashed a ten-year-old record in the famous HARRIERS v CYCLISTS event organised by Bingley Harriers.

She beat the previous best, set by Sarah Rowell in 1999, by 81 seconds with a time of 38min 46sec.

The achievement is all the more noteworthy as Wilkinson is still recovering after a year severely hampered by a serious foot injury which required surgery.

A total of 93 runners and 37 cyclists provided an exciting, closely-fought contest. The first ten counters on bikes beat their Harriers counterparts by a mere two points, despite the added obstacle of a fallen tree following the recent storms.

Winner Simon Bailey had a tremendous run in the muddy and wet conditions to relegate course record holder Rob Jebb to a rare second place on his bike. Bailey was a mere 15 seconds behind Jebb’s record from last year, finishing in 33:27.

The next day, the ever-popular ABBEY DASH 10K took place from Leeds to Kirkstall Abbey and back.

Fun runners were joined by competitors in the Inter-Regional Championships, with strong teams from Wales, the North and Midlands.

Jonny Mellor (Liverpool) won easily in 29:14, Patrick Martin (Sunderland) also breaking 30 minutes. Best women’s performance was by Kendal’s Rebecca Robinson, winning in 33:14.

Club runners made up 1,060 of the 5,930 overall. Airecentre Pacers in Guiseley had 15 competitors, Baildon 18, Bingley 12, Bradford Grammar five, Dragons in Bingley0 17, Eccleshill 14, Idle 12, Ilkley 44, Keighley & Craven 15, Otley ten, Pudsey & Bramley five, Pudsey Pacers 30, Spenborough seven and St Bede’s eight.

Newcomer Chris Thornton (Skyrac) impressed in his first 10K. Hoping to beat 36 minutes, he ran 34:23.

Bingley runners on the podium were John Convery (first over-45, 33:46), Shaun Jordan (first over-55, 37:16), Stewart Macdonald (second over-40, 33:11), Mike Smith (third over-65, 42:21) and Pauline Munro (third over-40, 37:46).

Denise Johnson (Baildon) was sixth over-50 (44:40) and Lynne Morris (Airecentre) sixth over-60 (52:10).

Baildon’s James Parrish, Michael Jeffrey of Otley and Pudsey & Bramley duo Richard Pattinson and Shane Green were all top-six finishers in their categories.
