LATE substitute Rhea Southcott was certainly glad that she went to athlete Darren Campbell's talk at Colin Appleyard's Nissan showroom in Keighley.

The pentathlete from Baildon made such a good impression as a guest at the event that was sponsored by Colin's grandson Jack that she received £500 from Appleyard's towards training equipment.

Nissan Team Ambassador Campbell spoke about his career as one of Britain’s most successful sprinters – he won 4x100 metres relay golds at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and twice at both the European Championships and Commonwealth Games, as well as taking Olympic silver in the 200m at Sydney in 2000 and European gold in the 100m in 1998.

He also took part in a question-and-answer session.

Rhea, who attends Titus Salt School, is England under-15s combined events indoor champion, and late last year made her England debut at the combined events home internationals in Glasgow.

She is determined to follow in the footsteps of her role model, Olympic and world champion Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Colin Appleyard’s Nissan general manager Dave Evans said: “The evening was a great success, and Darren really entered into the spirit.

"Everyone was very impressed with Rhea, so much so that we have donated £500 towards equipment to help her with her training.”

Nissan are the official automotive sponsor of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as being a Team GB partner. They will provide 5,000 official vehicles.
