JONATHAN Thewlis won the Yorkshire senior men's cross-country title at Lightwater Valley Park in Ripon.

The Notts AC runner built a slim advantage of seven seconds over the four 2,600-metre laps to beat Tom Adams of Ilkley in 37min 9sec.

Alan Buckley (Leeds City) was fourth, with Matt Lockyer (Pudsey & Bramley) ninth, Ben Marriott (Bingley) 16th and Woodhouse Grove teacher Phillip Tedd 20th.

In the senior women's race over three laps, comprising 7.8km, Helen Glover (Keighley & Craven) was an excellent sixth behind Claire Duck and Susan Partridge (both Leeds City), who had large gaps over Katie Walshaw (Wakefield) and Julie Briscoe (Wakefield).

Glover just missed out on fifth place to Caroline Lambert (Wetherby), who clocked 33:36.

Hannah Brown (Skyrac) was ninth and Zara Knappy (K&C) a significantly improved 14th, with Claire Green (P&B) just behind her and Jo Buckley (Bingley) in 19th.

Bronwen Owen, who came third overall last year when the junior women raced with the seniors, ran in a separate race and won by over three minutes in 23:51 over 6km.

Lucy Williamson of Ilkley was fifth ahead of Bradford-Airedale rival Lydia Farley, who returned from her studies at Derby University for the occasion.

Among the junior men, Emile Cairess – now representing Leeds City – won in 29:20, 30 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor from Sheffield.

In the younger age groups, there were top-ten finishes for Jemima Elgood (Ilkley), who was sixth in the under-17s, and James Lund (K&C), seventh in the boys' equivalent.

Bethan Morley (Ilkley), second, and Katie Atkinson, fourth, in the under-15 girls were joined by gold and silver among the under-15 boys by K&C team-mates Tom Barrett and Joe Hudson.

Bradford area athletes were even more prominent in the under-13s, where Eve Jones (Skyrac) was the victor, with Alice Jones (Wharfedale) third and Lilli Carr (K&C) fourth and Poppy Anderson (Ilkley) eighth.

Among the boys, Lucien Cuming and Joe Sherman were fourth and sixth respectively for Skyrac, with Alex Flaherty (Bingley) seventh and Rhys Watmough (K&C) tenth.
