JAMIL Parapia, fresh from a Bingley Grammar School fund-raising visit to Kenya, ran his fastest 5K in over ten years in winning the first JOHN CARR 5K at Esholt.

Parapia outsprinted England fell international Tom Adams (Ilkley) to record victory in 15min 03sec.

Scott Harrington (third, 15:35) and Zack Whitehead (sixth, 15:49) – both coached by Parapia – also ran life-time bests.

The ladies' times were equally impressive, with Claire Duck of Leeds City running 16:46 – the fourth fastest in the country so far this year.

Claire Thompson, of Longwood, was second in 17:03 and Helen Singleton (Wakefield) third in 17:06.

Five runners from Bradford's Enhanced Training Programme were prominent: Chris Williams (Queensbury, fourth in a life-time best, 15:42), Jonny McKenna (Clayton-le-Moors, 11th, 16:04), Sam Clegg (Rotherham, 14th, 16:17), Tom Collinge (Queensbury, 15th; 16:18) and Pete Hopson (Saltaire, 16th, 16:28).

The programme restarted this week for its 14-week summer block.

Will Kerr, also from the Enhanced Training Programme, finished a fine sixth from 6,663 finishers in the LEEDS HALF MARATHON.

His 74min 52sec time broke his half-marathon personal best from Liverpool earlier in the year by a few seconds.

Kerr headed a group of three behind winner Mohammad Abruezeq (Altrincham) in 71:18 and Leeds City's Mike Burrett in 72:08, plus the trio of Alasdair Tatham (North York Moors) and Valley Striders pair John Hobbs and Dan Fisher.

Kerr, captain of Saltaire Striders and Airedale Athletics, gained some excellent scalps: Paul Marchant from Rothwell, Richard Pattinson in 13th and Otley's Frank Beresford, who had an off-day in 20th.

Beresford's clubmate Julian Mawson ran excellently to finish 37th in 80:08 – his best run for four years. This comes after heart surgery several years ago, his earlier best being 71:58.

Fastest lady was former Saltaire athlete Hannah Oldroyd in 83:10 (chip-timed).
