QUENTIN Lewis (Baildon) and Rebecca Cesar de Sa (Skyrac) won their over-35s category races in the YORKSHIRE VETERANS' CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS at Nunroyd Park, Yeadon.

Lewis was fifth of the 50 runners in a combined 35-49 age-group event. Rotherham's Richard Harris was a clear victor in 28min 35sec, with Paul Millgate (Wetherby) outsprinting Darren Newbould of Hallamshire for second. The top four were all over-40s.

Lewis (29:30) was left in no-man's land, almost 100 yards behind Joe Fowler, but with local rival Colin Walker (Pudsey & Bramley) a similar distance adrift. Liam Dunne (Otley) kept touch in seventh until the end.

Gerard Mills, from Bradford-Airedale, was third over-45 in 12th place (31:27), bettered by two Wetherby representatives.

Baildon and home club Skyrac had good turn-outs, with Wetherby winning the team event for 40-49s, Skyrac in second and Baildon third.

The women's race numbered 84 competitors, with a highly-competitive front end.

Fell international Helen Berry (Holmfirth) was the event winner in 15:40. Wetherby's Lisa Mawer held off Margaret Sykes (Holmfirth) in second as the best over-45.

Cesar de Sa was close behind in 16:32 as first F35. Lesley Watson (Bingley) finished ninth (17:00) and Baildon's Emma Stoney 16th (fourth F35; 17:53).

Sarah O'Sullivan (21st), Beth Massey (23rd) and Amanda Bellwood (33rd) were first runners home from good turn-outs by the Keighley & Craven, Ilkley and Saltaire clubs.

Bingley Ladies were third team in the 35-44 age-group, ahead of Keighley and Baildon.

In the over-50s men's race, Baildon resident Steve Webb was a fine seventh and Pete Pyrah made a welcome return to action in 15th (second over-60).

Les Haynes beat Bingley Harriers team-mate Pete Covey to the over-70s' male title.

The final event of the ten-race GRAND PRIX is at Spenborough on November 9.

In both men's and women's leagues, Horsforth, Stainland, Kirkstall and Pudsey Pacers are in the top four.

But Queensbury's men are an excellent fifth in the all-to-count category and Eccleshill are seventh in the women's league.
