Bradford Bulls players are urging people to sign up and tackle the Epilepsy Action 10k, joining the record 1,400 runners now registered for the city’s annual road race.

Squad members Dale Ferguson, 25, Tom Olbison, 22, and Danny Addy, 23, met staff from the Yeadon-based charity in Centenary Square yesterday to promote the event on Sunday, March 16.

The race has become a permanent fixture on the Bradford events calendar since it began in 2008, having raised £235,000 for the charity with more than 5,250 runners crossing the finish line.

“It’s great to support such a fun event, with a serious sporting element as well,” said Mr Addy.

“People should get involved and do it, as it can be a real personal achievement. It’s also raising money and awareness of a great charity, as well as a good day out.”

The 2014 race sees a slight change in the route from previous years, resulting in a faster, flatter course.

Runners will follow a 10k route, starting at 9am, from Centenary Square to Frizinghall and back. The route will be closed to all traffic from 8.15am to 10.45am, with the course suitable for both elite and first-time runners.

Last year’s race, which had to be delayed until April due to heavy snow, saw Tesfaye Debele smash the course record, achieving a time of 31 minutes and two seconds.

For the 2014 race, Epilepsy Action is offering a £50 prize to the first runner who can beat this time and finish the race in under 30 minutes.

Carl Foster, Epilepsy Action’s fundraising events officer, said it “meant a lot” for the charity to receive the support of the Bulls.

“We’ve already beaten our record number of runners, and the support of such an important club in the Bradford community can only boost that,” he said.

“We want to be able to grow the event year on year to raise more money for the charity, as it really does improve lives.”

Entry fees for the run, which is supported by Airedale Athletics and Sovereign Health Care, are £18, or £16 for runners affiliated to a UK Athletics running club.
