Running log

Scott Harrington continued in the form of his life with second place in the Liversedge Half at Roberttown.

Just a week after a huge personal best in the Dewsbury 10K, the Otley AC athlete ran 74min 32sec in finishing a minute behind Holmfirth rival Matt Pierson.

Harrington clocked 74:01 for a half-marathon in Derbyshire in November but the Liversedge course is undulating with a long drag over Hartshead Moor Top, a very sharp drop into Bailiff Bridge and then skirting Brighouse.

He was well supported by four team-mates all in the top 30 – Liam Dunne (79:12, sixth), Mark Hall (79:29, seventh) Thomas Midgley (82:32, 14th) and Richard Smith (86:15, 30th). Hall was a clear winner of the over-50s category for his new club.

Spenborough were another club showing well among the 457 finishers in Sunday’s event. Their 22 runners were led home by Kevin Ogden in fifth (78:17), Martin Hall (82:57), Neil Barker (83:08) and Tom Dart (22nd in 83:32).

Eccleshill Road Runners’ recent recruit James Goodall is making rapid strides, having started competitive running only last summer.

After a personal best of 36:54 at Dewsbury, he ran an equally impressive 82:03 at Liversedge to finish 28th.

* The Wadsworth Trog over the moors around Hebden Bridge on Saturday (32.2km, with 1,220m of climbs) lived up to its reputation of being tougher than the Three Peaks.

A strong headwind made the drenched energy-sapping bogs and tussocks harder than ever, with 15 runners forced to drop out.

Calder Valley and Dark Peak fell runners were prominent among the 158 finishers.

Macclesfield’s Simon Harding had a tough battle with Tom Brunt (Dark Peak). Harding won by just over 100 yards in 22 seconds over three hours.

Calder trio Joseph Crossfield, Ian Symington and Johnny Helliwell took third, fifth and sixth positions. Crossfield, an under-23, remained close to the two leaders throughout and had over a 12-minute gap on fourth-placed Mark Ollerenshaw (Glossopdale).

Amy Green of Keighley & Craven was fourth lady home in an impressive 3hr 47min 11sec. Helen Fines (Calder Valley) was first in 3:34:47, followed by Nicky Spinks and Heather-Catherine Marshall, both from Dark Peak.
