Hundreds of determined athletes braved cold and difficult conditions to take part in the 2013 Bradford City Runs this morning.

More than 400 runners took part in the event, tackling five kilometre, ten kilometre or half-marathon routes around the city centre streets.

John Dennis, a member of Bradford Athletics Networks who helped to organise the day, said: “It’s been a great turn out and there’s been lots of support from the public around the course as well.

"Today has been a benchmark for future events and something we can definitely build on for next year.”

The event is run in conjunction with Bradford Council and supports charities Sue Ryder and Epilepsy Action.

Gerard Mills, a 43-year-old member of the Bradford Airedale running club, took the honours in the men’s five km race and admitted: “I’m a bit jaded to be honest, but I can’t praise the race enough, I really enjoyed it. It was a quick course, and a well thought-out route.”

Karen Lambe, a 42-year-old Ilkley Harrier and mother-of-two, was the first athlete home in the women’s five km race.

“It’s amazing, as I’ve never won anything before,” she said. “It was hard, as the wind was so strong and it was quite an undulating course. It was a challenge, but that’s what I like and it was a really lively atmosphere in the city centre.”

Matt King, 28, a New Zealand-born triathlete now living in Leeds, said training with Great Britain stars, and former Bradford Grammar School pupils, Jonathan and Alastair Brownlee had spurred him on to victory in the men’s half-marathon, only his second race in the UK.

“It was very tough, at times the wind was just about blowing you over,” he said. “It was a good honest course though, and I’d love to come back next year.”

Charlotte Trueman, a 38-year-old from Baildon, triumphed in the women’s half-marathon and said: “I was looking for a time of around two hours, but I’ve smashed that.

“The route was a killer, but I’ll definitely be back next year and I think the event will grow in popularity.”
