ANDY Thornton (Barrow-in-Furness) won the second Spen Winter Sweep, defeating Andrew Gallagher (Luddendenfoot) 21-18 in the final.

Thornton had entered the previous week only to lose his first-round game 21-12 to Chris Mordue (Pudsey) – but got his revenge this week with a 21-15 second-round success.

He followed that with wins over Scott Bloodworth (Ladyhill) 21-4 and Kez Smith (Crossgates) 21-20 before edging past Gallagher in the decider.

Gallagher has recently returned to the game after a number of years away and, after stepping in as a late replacement, carded some impressive victories on his way to the final.

The action continues on Saturday with another class field.
