The trout season ends this Sunday, so anglers should not purposefully target this species until March 24.

The annual meeting will take place at the Moorlands Club in Cleckheaton on Wednesday, October 11 (7.30pm). All members are invited to attend, although the current yearbook must be shown on entry, and there will be a free pie-and-pea supper. SKIPTON AA

Only a couple of days remains of the present brown-trout season, which draws to a close at midnight tomorrow and reopens in Yorkshire on March 25 2018 – except where no close season is in force such as on totally enclosed waters where spawning cannot successfully take place or where the controlling club still decides to abide with the traditional seasons.

At the moment, Embsay Reservoir is providing some excellent sport for trout, with brown, rainbow and tigers all falling readily for the dry fly, worm and spinner. The best fish of the week has been a brownie of just over 1000g, which fell to a small mepp, while some decent rainbows have also been caught. The worm is also accounting for good catches of perch, although nothing of any size.

Whinnygill Reservoir appears quiet at the moment, with nothing of any size being reported. Brown-trout fishing is slow and most fish that are being caught are roach and skimmers.

On the River Aire, the fishing is still quite reasonable for brown trout, although there has not been anything outstanding recently. Both the worm and the fly are worth trying and should account for some good sport. The river is running just above normal and is in good angling condition.

Broughton Road is continuing to fish well on the canal, with some good bags of roach, perch, skimmers, ruffe and gudgeon taken on the red maggot near to the Sawley Street entrance. This length will be the venue for the second Skipton Winter League match on Sunday and competitors will be hoping that the good fishing continues. The draw will be at 8am, with fishing from 9am-noon, and it will be the last time that new registrations will be accepted.

News that fish passes on the River Aire at Crown Point, Leeds and downstream at Knostrop are now officially working will help to further improve the fishing all the way upstream to Gargrave and beyond. Coarse fish have for years moved downstream but were unable to make the journey in reverse. Now they will be able to do so and it may not be too long before the mighty salmon makes its presence felt in Craven.

BRADFORD SEAAC

Our last trip on September 14 again had to be cancelled because of the weather. However, we have a trip on Sunday, October 8 to Hartlepool aboard Lone Shark. If anyone would like to go, call our trip secretary on 07711-987833. Our last general meeting went well, with a few good ideas for winter trips such as Fleetwood later this year or early next year. This will be looked into with the trip secretary if there is enough interest. Our next general meeting will be at the New Inn, East Bierley on Tuesday, October 17 (8pm). New members will be made most welcome.

SALTAIRE AA

The annual meeting will take place on Monday, November 6 at the Ring O' Bells in Shipley. Any members with proposals need to send them in writing, or by e-mail, along with a seconder to the committee before next Monday. Details are in the yearbook, which must be shown on entry. Can members attend as we are always looking for new committee members and fresh ideas.

BINGLEY AC

The canal continues to fish well, with good nets of small silvers – especially around the boats at Crossflatts, where the fish tend to shoal up in the winter. The trout season ends tomorrow.
