SKIPTON AA

Conditions appeared to be quite good last Sunday for the second match in this year's Peter Hart Memorial Series, which was fished on the bowling club stretch of the canal down Broughton Road. A light west wind was blowing and the sun kept breaking through to keep the temperature reasonably mild.

The combination of amateur boat captains and heavy boat traffic provided some amusing incidents that included a crash, some emergency reversals and running aground across the canal orientation of one or two boats and a heated argument.

It was not surprising that with all the commotion, the fishing suffered and catches were on the low side, with sport being provided by small roach, perch and ruffe usually caught close in to the side on maggots or pinkies. A decent shoal of bream seen heading towards the match length turned back in the direction of Skipton when confronted by the boat trouble.

At the end of the three-hour match, Dave Fenn took top honours with 520g, while Jason Aldis was runner-up with 480g. Other leading weights: 3 Andrew Thomas 440g, 4 Malcolm Mawson 310g, 5 Russell Heaton 240g, 6 Mick Cockshott 180g.

Whinnygill Reservoir has continued to fish well in the warm weather and most anglers have enjoyed decent catches with most of the many species the water now contains. It does seem to have an off day every time there is a match and the last Sunset Series fixture was no exception, with some poor weights being recorded. The next match will be on Tuesday with the draw at 6pm.

Following the recent fresh let on the River Aire, sport received a welcome boost – but it did not last for long and now the river is as low as ever and the weed is staging a comeback on most lengths. Fly fishermen are enjoying the best of the fishing with decent brownies and smaller grayling, of which there are plenty about. Prospects should remain good with the forecast of mainly dry weather, although the river will remain a fly water for the time being.

Some sections of the River Calder will be closed on Sunday for the second round of the Calder League, which will draw at the Railway Inn at 9am. Shelf Dam will be closed on Monday until 4.30pm while some filming takes place. Anglers fishing on the River Derwent are advised that our bottom stretch at Howsham Wood extends from the bridge up to the school boundary including on the island, despite what some locals claim. There have been a number of good chub and barbel catches reported over the last week from various club stretches, including the River Wharfe at Thorpe Arch, River Nidd at Cowthorpe and River Swale at Thornton Bridge. A total of 20 fish cradles have now been made at Knotford for anglers to use while unhooking fish to improve fish care and reduce the spread of disease. All nets and weigh slings must still be dipped in the disinfectant tank on entry for at least ten minutes.

LISTERHILLS AA

The members' match fished at Nun Monkton on the Ouse produced joint-winners, each having a barbel in their catch. Result: 1= G Kitchen and D Jackson 4lb, 3 E Harrison 3lb 10oz, 4 G Reeday 3lb 9oz. Several pike were hooked and lost. Dogs in the river retrieving sticks were also a problem for some competitors. The next match is this Sunday, an open at Rodley. Call 01132-772215 to book on. This is followed by another open the following Sunday, also at Rodley, with the draw for both matches being 10am. Any suggestions relating to matches for next year are welcomed. Members fishing at Pilleys should note the times for the gate to be locked on the noticeboard. Also, anyone parking cars beyond the yellow barriers may find they can be locked at any time. To avoid this it is recommended that you park sensibly in the car park to the immediate right as you go through the main gate in Harrogate Road. An angler fishing without a membership book is likely to be prosecuted after giving false information to a watcher when asked to produce his membership book.
