BRADFORD No 1 AA

Graham Jackson has become the first overall winner of the Ronald Hipwell Memorial Trophy after Sunday's final round of the Raskelf Winter Series. His total of 135½ points out of a possible 143 over the four matches beat Fred Prudham (131), while James Vickerman (119) claimed third place ahead of Simon Foster (107).

Result of final round: 1 Michal Wasilewski 28lb 8oz (F1 carp on feeder), 2 Dave Atkinson 21lb 10oz (F1s on feeder), 3 John Walsh 18lb 10oz (F1s on pole), 4 Graham Jackson 17lb 9oz, 5 Andy Bradley 14lb 7oz.

Warmer temperatures over recent weeks have meant fish are coming onto the feed at Knotford, with bream and carp being caught in good numbers. James Tingle's session over the weekend resulted in three carp over 20lb, including the first capture of one of the newly-stocked fish at 29lb 14oz – an early leader for the Knotford Carp Cup.

Could all anglers fishing for carp, in particular, ensure they are using 'safe rigs' with leads that detach upon a take. These are extremely valuable fish, and hopefully there for future generations to enjoy, but fish being left trailing leads could prove fatal.

KEIGHLEY AC

Club official Darren Watson found an unorthodox way to catch a predatory pike this week. The veteran angler, usually so skilful at tempting fish to the net with guile and the right bait combinations, landed the pike while clearing overgrown vegetation from a still-water site. He discovered the fish in a net he was using and quickly and safely returned it to the water. With temperatures on the rise, anglers are returning to the canal and river banks – although our officials have issued a reminder that only fly, small spinners and worm can be used on river waters until the middle of June. The club endorse the three-month ban on cereal baits and maggot to encourage fish, especially trout and grayling, to spawn around Keighley, which is home to some of the most richly-stocked swims in Yorkshire. The canal remains unaffected by the restriction. Annual fishing licences are due to be renewed from tomorrow and can be purchased online or from post offices.

SKIPTON AA

It seems the fine weather last weekend caught many anglers by surprise, judging by the low number who chose to fish the River Aire on brown-trout season opening day. Only the Bradford No 1 stretch on Heslaker Lane could muster more than a single angler, as did the Skipton-Bradford joint water lower down the river. The river looked in ideal condition, carrying clear extra water following several days of rain which culminated in bank-top conditions only two days before the opening. The few anglers who wet a line over the weekend caught mainly small trout on the worm but there should be plenty of bigger fish to catch in the weeks to come. Opening-day catches from Embsay Reservoir are sparse and its altitude and the recent wet weather have combined to keep the fish down. As the temperature rises, sport will improve and the recent restocking on this water with good quality rainbow trout in the 680g to 1590g range will further help. On Sunday there is another open match on Whinnygill Reservoir at Skipton, draw 8am, fishing 9am-1pm, entry fee £7 all in. The water is well stocked with new fish.

LISTERHILLS AA

The present Environment Agency fishing-rod licence expires today and must be renewed if you are going fishing. There has been a price increase (see gov.uk/get-a-fishing-licence for full details). The strong, gusting winds severely hampered competitors on the front pond at Moor Monkton on March 19. Result (last match of winter series): 1 J Harrison 36lb 12oz (seven carp plus a few skimmers), 2 E Harrison 19lb 15oz (quality roach and skimmers), 3 D Stephenson 12lb 12oz, 4 D Jackson 7lb 4oz, 5 G Kitchen 6lb 12oz, 6 G Reeday 4lb 13oz. Final positions: 1 E Harrison 53lb 7½oz, 2 J Harrison 41lb 11¼oz, 3 P Woods 27lb 4oz. The next members' match is on Sunday on Osprey Lake at Kippax Park, meet 9am, two keep-nets required, membership books will be checked.
