BRADFORD CITY AA

Despite the heavy showers over the past few days, it has remained warm but windy, though the forecast is for cooler and wetter days over the weekend. The last day of the trout season is today and from now until the end of March next year, game-river anglers' thoughts will be turning to grayling.

BCAA stillwaters and rivers are still producing the goods for many anglers. Barbel have featured on both the Swale and the Ure, with Steve Wake achieving a personal-best fish of 11lb 5oz on meat and Adrian Dunn landing a fish of 8lb 8oz from Lower Dunsforth on only his second visit to the venue.

Although anglers on Staveley Lakes have also been reporting good fish – though none of record size – we have not had any reports from Shipton this week. Game angler Phil Bailey has been out and about after trout and grayling. Sunny conditions on the Ure proved tough fishing, with only about ten fish to the net between three anglers. However, a repeat visit a couple of days later saw slightly-elevated water levels. Despite a stiff downstream wind, soft-hackled spiders cast up and across saw large numbers of grayling and a solitary large brown trout come to the net.

On Wednesday, the club held their annual meeting in Laisterdyke, although this was not well attended. Those present heard Jim Munden give his president's report before officers and committee members were elected, refreshments served and propositions for rule changes discussed. An update on decisions reached will be posted on the BCAA website at www.bradfordcityaa.co.uk and e-mailed to members shortly.

Result of Local Challenge Trophy at Lower Dunsforth last weekend: 1 T Hannam 13lb (bream taken on groundbait feeder and worm), 2 M Prudhoe 6lb 14oz (barbel on stickfloat and double maggot), 3 R Sowerby (Knaresborough AC) 3lb 10oz (roach and perch on stickfloat and maggot). Next match is the Cinderella Trophy on Saturday, October 8. To book, or for more information, contact Rodney Brooks on 07875-275749.

The brown-trout season in Yorkshire closes at midnight tonight on all river waters. Certain enclosed waters where there are no prospects of natural spawning no longer enforce the close season but it is up to the angler to ascertain the rules of the water before fishing. On our reservoir at Embsay, the close season applies as there are two feeder streams in which brown trout can and do spawn. At Whinnygill Reservoir, the Association could dispense with the close season in absence of any suitable spawning streams but has chosen to enforce the close season to protect the fish and have commonality across all the waters, hence the need to find out the club's rules. The recent change in the weather has seen a gradual reduction in temperature, although the River Aire has remained in good form for all types of fishing. Plenty of anglers have been fishing and have been rewarded with good bags of trout and grayling to well over the 450g mark, mainly on the fly. Embsay and Whinnygill reservoirs are still fishing well without producing any fish of distinction. Embsay is well stocked with trout, while Whinnygill is yielding many different species of coarse fish, together with the occasional big brownie. There has been an incident recently at Embsay concerning a group of youths throwing stones in the water to distract anglers and ruin their fishing. Anyone affected in this way should endeavour to contact the Association bailiff (phone number in rule book) immediately if possible so that evidence can be given to the police. Skipton Winter League competitors will be at the waterside again on Sunday – at our new length of the canal on Broughton Road – with the top of Sawley Street as headquarters. This will be the last match when new entrants can register for the league. The draw is 8am with fishing from 9am-noon. Further details from 01756-799671 or 07581-082576.
