BRADFORD CITY AA

AFTER a spell of warm and sunny weather, it’s turned cooler and definitely more like autumn. Local river levels are quite low, and fresher water and conditions will benefit the fish. Many anglers have been out, and it’s good to see young fishermen on the bank.

At Staveley Lakes, Richard Morris, fishing with his two young sons, said: “They both float-fished maggots and were quickly among the roach. It was a fish a chuck and smiles all round – a great place to start out. They are both now hooked and want to go fishing every night."

Part-year membership – which allows holders to fish our waters from September 1-December 31 inclusive – continues to be available for new members via the club’s online shop, which can be accessed via a link on the website at www.bradfordcityaa.co.uk.

The committee continues to work on various projects, but the most important news is that we have signed a lease for fishing at Woodhall Pond in Stanningley, also working with Leeds Council to restore the lake in the medium term. More information will be put on the club website and be sent to members shortly.

Progress is also being made on habitat improvements along the River Aire. Members are reminded that the annual meeting is next Wednesday – see the front of the yearbook for details – when refreshments will be served, and a licensed bar is on hand.

BRADFORD No 1 AA

Craig Turbitt was crowned Calder Champion 2016 on Sunday, with 13lb 11oz of roach and perch to take home the £650 first prize. Fishing proved difficult for many of the 75 anglers taking part, with bright sunshine and a low, clear river meaning bites were at a premium. Other positions: 2 Darryl Taylor 10lb 8oz, 3 Steve Clegg 10lb 6oz, 4 Brett Clarke 9lb 15oz, 5 Nick Chaffer 9lb 4oz, 6 Paul McMillan 9lb 1oz. The final round of this year's Calder League will take place this Sunday, drawing at the Railway Inn at 9am. Punky's 8 look set to claim their first series win in five years with a lead of 7½ points on second-placed Mirfield and only eight points to fish for. This year's annual meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 12 and all members are invited. Next year's committee will be voted in at this meeting, along with the discussion and voting on any proposed rule changes and the presentation of trophies, including the new carp cups. There will be a free pie and pea supper for all who attend, and full details are in the yearbook, which is required on attendance. Bailiff Danny Holmes caught 67 roach, ide and skimmers, all on bread punch, in a short session at Shelf Dam. A number of other reports have also been received from anglers at Shelf in the past week, catching impressive numbers of bream, chub and perch.

SKIPTON AA

Skipton Winter League competitors embarked on their eight-match series last Sunday morning, when the first match was fished on the canal at Swine Lane, Riddlesden. Conditions were very good and not a single boat passed through the length until about a minute from the end of the three-hour match. Catch rate among the 18 anglers registered for the series was 100 per cent. Result: 1 Jason Aldis 1200g (2:10:0) (a good bream and numerous small roach and perch) 2 Dave Fenn 640g (1:6:12) (all small fish), 3= Kenny Wrigh, Richard Thornton, Mark Smith 540g (1:3:0), 6 Danny Bolland 500g (1:1:12).

Smallish jack pike proved to be a nuisance throughout the match length, taking several fish off the hook when being landed or attacking fish already in the keep-net. Surprisingly, none of the pike allowed themselves to be captured.

The next match will be fished on Skipton AA's length of the canal at Broughton Road, Skipton, on Sunday, October 2. This will be the last time that new anglers can register to fish in the league for the remaining matches.

The River Aire continues to maintain a good flow following the thundery weather, and more anglers are returning to the water, where sport is quite good. Recent catches have generally consisted of decent brown trout and plenty of grayling to over the 450g (1:0:0) mark. Fly anglers have enjoyed the best sport using the nymph.

Bream up to 1360g (3:0:0) and perch to 910g (2:0:0) are turning up in catches at Whinnygill Reservoir, which is fishing very well. Some big trout are also moving but proving difficult to land. All four species of trout in Embsay Reservoir are coming to the net, including one or two decent-sized fish. Perch are feeding well, and catches of numerous but rather small fish have been recorded.

There have been recent incidents at the reservoir of small perch being killed and left on the bank, together with piles of litter. Members witnessing anyone responsible for this should phone the bailiff immediately on the number shown in the membership book.

BRADFORD SEA AC

One of the highlights of the trip to Westport, on which plenty of fish were caught, was a 3lb 8oz John Dorry, caught by Terry Gledhill, which is a club record. The trip had to be called off after four days because of a storm which lasted for three days. Our next trip is to Rhyl on Wednesday. There are spaces available, so if you want to join our happy band, please ring Dave to book your place. The general meeting went well, with many aspects of sea angling debated, but the main thing was the lack of support for day trips. New members are needed, so if you would like to join the club come to our meetings on the third Tuesday of every month at the New Inn, East Bierley (8pm). You will be made most welcome.
