The River Wharfe at Addingham is fishing well for trout and grayling on both fly and stick float.

BRADFORD CITY AA

As reported so often this year, weather conditions have been difficult for many anglers this week. River levels have been challengingly low and the fish very spooky as a result. However, heavy rain on Wednesday put some refreshing extra water into the Dales rivers, and this bodes well for river anglers this weekend.

Many members have been out on club fisheries. Phil Bailey had a good number of fish on a dry red tag fly from the upper Wharfe at Buckden, even though the water was low. Latest riverfly monitoring shows many heptagenid stone-clinging nymphs, suggesting another possible successful fly for anglers. Michael Ickringill found little fly life on the Aire at Gargrave due to a strong downstream breeze but couple of out-of-season grayling came to the net and he saw several good trout and plenty of smaller ones.

Funkirk Farm was more productive, with several trout and grayling from just a short stretch. On the coarse-fishing front, Stuart Brookes had a successful trip to Topcliffe, with a couple of barbel and a new personal-best chub of 6lb.

Anglers have also been out on BCAA stillwaters. Shipton Lake has been especially crowded, with very few pegs available for late-arriving anglers. Staveley Lakes have also been very busy, though Oakworth has been a bit quieter. Terry Duncalf had two good fish at Shipton – a common carp at 21lb 14oz and a 10lb mirror, caught on his own baits and Advanced Angling Solutions’ xxx gape hooks.

Unfortunately, we have had some problems with poaching and theft this week on the River Swale at Topcliffe. Poachers were challenged at both Salmon Hall and in another club’s water at Topcliffe Mill, while thieves stole a quantity of clothing and equipment from an angler’s car parked along Winn Lane. We’ve also seen both farmers’ and BCAA signs removed from stiles and electric fences at Salmon Hall. BCAA members are reminded to take special care when leaving their vehicles, and not to leave any equipment or valuables on display. Poaching can be reported to the police, since it is a criminal offence under the 1968 Theft Act.

BCAA have also had a complaint of poaching from the landowner bordering the upstream limit of the club’s fishing at Topcliffe. We are not clear that BCAA members are the culprits, but please remember that the club has the fishing on only three fields upstream of the road bridge, and anglers trespass onto the next – and clearly marked – club fishery at their own risk.

The next BCAA match is the Staveley Championship tomorrow (Saturday). Places are still available and can be booked via Rodney Brooksbank on 07875-275749.

SALTAIRE AA

What is believed to be one of the biggest barbel ever caught from the River Aire was captured from one of our stretches last week by member David Smith, weighing in at an impressive 10lb 8oz. Along with this, David had others weighing 8lb 8oz and 4lb 6oz. The river is fishing very well for all species. Please note that there is no night fishing on any of our waters. Any member found to be breaking this rule will be expelled from the club. Quality bream are showing on all sections of the canal, along with good nets of roach. Please keep catch reports coming in to saltaireangling@gmail.com.

SKIPTON AA

Our second taster day of the year at Whinnygill Reservoir again proved to be a great success, attracting the maximum of 46 people at any one time, with at least 20 of them youngsters. Although conditions were generally reasonable, the fish once again were difficult to entice. Perch saved the day, and enough were eventually caught to give encouragement for the future.

Louis Parkin, who is only six, showed everyone how to do it and had the best catch of the day with four perch. His reward was a complete fishing outfit, which was presented to him by Skipton Mayor Andrew Rankin at the end of proceedings.

Earlier in the week at the same venue, competitors in the evening match also found the fish hard to catch and three anglers failed to get a bite. Result: 1 John Leatt (best peg on the reservoir at the south west corner) 1900g (4:3:0) (mixed bag of roach, perch, skimmers and a 300g tench), 2 Michael Ickringill 120g (0:4:4) (perch), 3 Simon Chenior 80g (0:3:0) (gudgeon), 4= three with 10g (0:0:6) of minute perch.

Skipton member Wayne Eason showed the value of the Association’s new fishing rights on the canal when he fished on the Broughton Road length and landed a very good haul of mainly mixed silver fish. This length has tended to be ignored by anglers in recent years but could always produce some good weights of coarse fish, including the occasional pike and odd trout.

The basin length in the centre of Skipton is well known for fine winter perch but other big fish lurk there as well, including pike and bream. Ernie Ramsbotham had a three-hour session late last week and landed three good bream weighing about 1365g (3:0:0) each.

BINGLEY AC

The warmer weather has put the fish on the feed, with good nets of tench from Coppice Pond. Plenty of trout are falling to both fly and coarse anglers on the River Aire, while the canal is producing good nets of small silver fish, with the odd larger bream, usually early or late in the day when boat traffic has slowed. The next match is on Sunday, July 17 at Settler Dam.
