There are ongoing works on the River Swale at Maunby to repair flood banks, so there may be some disruption for anglers during the week. Thanks to all who attended the work party at Knotford last weekend.

Beneath British Waters went ahead with their dive and, although water visibility was reduced due to recent storms, footage of tench, roach, perch, carp and pike was filmed. We hope to have the video on our website very soon.

Anglers at Howsham Wood have reported good catches of chub and dace on float and maggot. The River Nidd at Cowthorpe appears to have kept the large numbers of dace that were present last year in most pegs.

Forthcoming matches: Sunday, July 3, Calder League round one (teams of eight); Sunday, July 10, River Nidd, Nun Monkton (members' match); Sunday, July 17, Calder League round two (teams of 8); Saturday, July 23, Raskelf Lake (junior match).

SKIPTON AA

We have just landed a plumb length of fishing at Skipton – a good mile and a half of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The length starts at the swing bridge at Niffany Farm and extends to Belmont Bridge in Skipton, plus the whole of the fishable portion of the Springs Canal.

In recent times the length has been known to produce some good canal fishing, with the basin being well known for quality perch, roach, bream and pike. Springs Canal attracts large bream during the summer months, while the Broughton Road length can yield some good general coarse fishing, with maybe the odd brown trout.

The stretch will be vigorously bailiffed, and signs will provide full details for anglers. It is anticipated that day tickets will be available at a reasonable price, and membership of the Association will include the new fishing.

Craven Summer League competitors found the going tough when they fished the fourth match in this season’s series of eight last Sunday. The venue was the Swine Lane length of the canal at Riddlesden, and water and weather conditions appeared ideal.

Unfortunately, the competitors soon found out that the fish had lost their appetite, and bites were few and far between, with just a few small roach and perch turning up in catches the end of the three-hour match. Result: 1 Simon Chenior 100g (0:3:8), 2 Ernie Ramsbotham 80g (0:3:0), 3 Russell Heaton 60g (0:2:0), 4 Keith Brown 50g (0:1:12), 5 Kenny Wright 40g (0:1:4), 6= Jason Aldis and Robert Thornton 10g (0:0:6). League positions at halfway: 1 Russell Heaton 73pts, 2 Robert Thornton 67, 3 Jason Aldis 66, 4= Keith Brown, Kenny Wright 65; 6 Simon Chenior 59. The next match will be fished on the gasworks length at Silsden on Sunday, July 3.

Another taster day will be held this Sunday on Whinnygill Reservoir, just off Shortbank Road, Skipton. The event is basically geared for prospective junior anglers, although adults will not be turned away. Tackle, bait and a rod licence (if needed) will be provided, just turn up any time between 10am and 3pm for a 4pm conclusion.

SALTAIRE AA

It is with sadness that we announce the death of our club secretary David Senior last Wednesday after a short illness. He had been a committee member and watcher for many years. Other family members are present and past committee members. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family.

What is believed to be one of the biggest barbel ever caught from the River Aire was captured from one of our stretches last week by member David Smith, weighing in at an impressive 10lb 8oz. Along with this, David had others weighing 8lb 8oz and 4lb 6oz. The river is fishing very well for all species. Please note that there is no night fishing on any of our waters. Any member found to be breaking this rule will be expelled from the club. Quality bream are showing on all sections of the canal, along with good nets of roach.

If any angler has any pictures of recent catches, could they e-mail them to saltaireangling@gmail.com to update the club's website.
