BRADFORD CITY AA

Spring weather finally arrived in Yorkshire last weekend but then the rain clouds rolled in midweek and turned many of the Dales rivers into chocolate torrents again. Hopefully the rivers will be back in good order again for anglers to enjoy over the next few days.

A bit of sun has seen anglers out on BCAA's rivers and lakes in significantly stronger force than for several months. Reports from BCAA members on the Aire, Ure and Wharfe have been of a few olives trickling off the water but no decent fly-hatches yet. Occasional trout – some of them large – and out-of-season grayling have been caught on nymphs but fish do not yet seem to be rising freely.

On the coarse-fishing front, Dan White had a good net of bream and tench at Shipton. Staveley's large lake has produced some well-conditioned carp for Richard Williams, as well as bream of over 5lb, chub, roach and occasional ide for other anglers. Catches on the small lake at Staveley have especially featured chub and skimmers, while over the weekend Chris Ellison took several carp in one session on the bottom pond of the club's Oakworth fishery.

BCAA's next match is tomorrow, with anglers competing on Staveley small lake for the Illingworth Rosebowl. Places are still available and can be booked via Rodney Brooksbank on 07875-275749. Other events in the diary are an open day for fly anglers at Gargrave on Saturday, May 14 and a working party on the River Swale at Topcliffe on Sunday, May 15. Further details of both events will be published nearer the date.

SKIPTON AA

All the Bradford City AA waters are now catch and release. The only fish that may be retained are pike up to a weight of 2270g. All pike above this weight must be returned alive to the water. Since the brown-trout season started there have not been many anglers fishing this length of the Aire, mainly on account of the rather poor weather, and catches have only been moderate.

Conditions were quite reasonable last weekend, with a good number of anglers in action, many for the first time this season. One or two decent brownies came to the net but the fishing is still relatively slow and the snow during Saturday evening hardly improved the sport for Sunday.

It is a similar story further downstream on the Skipton lengths, where no particularly outstanding catches have been reported so far. One or two extra anglers were out on Saturday but catches were only two or three fish up to around the 450g. The Skipton AA water on the Aire is also catch and release, except for small pike as per the Bradford City AA weight limit.

Skipton Summer League competitors have selected their matches for this year and the first one will be held at Swine Lane, Riddlesden near Keighley on Sunday, May 1. The draw for all eight matches will be held at 7am, with fishing from 8am-11am. Further details will be published next week.

BRADFORD No 1 AA

The club's first 24-hour carp-only members' match will be held at Knotford from 10am on Saturday, April 30. Tickets are available for £15 from James on 07786-743302 and the draw will take place at 8am. A maximum of two rods can be used at any time on this match but surface fishing is not permitted. The lake will be closed to night-permit holders on the night prior to the match. The last remaining night permits for Knotford and Kirklees are available on the club website. Both waters continue to produce good results, with numerous catches of carp over 20lb reported as well as nets of tench for coarse anglers. Bream to over 11lb are being caught at Knotford, with most fish being around the 7lb mark. Fly fisherman visiting the Wharfe at Addingham are reporting good catches of brown trout.

SALTAIRE AA

The weed at Tong Park has started to return and we are aware of this. We have taken steps to try to eradicate it. A working party will be held in the near future to clear some of the weed and also to install fish refuges. If any members could spare an hour or two it would be greatly appreciated. Details of dates will be published on the website and our Facebook page. Please also be aware that the cob swan is very aggressive at the moment, so be careful. The committee have been made aware of a video showing the mistreatment of a pike on the boats section at Shipley. If anyone knows of any details of the incident, could they contact any member of the committee.

BRADFORD SEA AC

On the west coast at Rhyl, there are plenty of dabs, dogs and whiting but it is too early for the big boys (bull huss and tope) to move in yet. A few herring are being caught, so the mackerel won't be far behind. That is when tope and bull huss move in. They could make an appearance at any time. Our next general meeting is on Tuesday at the New Inn, East Bierley (8pm). If anyone would like a day's fishing out of Whitby aboard Shytorque, call Dave on 07711-987833 and he will try to book a trip. Fishing out of Whitby on the wrecks is improving as the weather settles down, with cod up to 10lb being caught and there are plenty in the 3lb-5lb mark.

The next match will be on Sunday, April 24 at a venue yet to be decided. To book on, call Tony on 07971-428678
