BRADFORD Esprit Diving Club members Evie Webb and Holly Waxman added to their pool of experience by competing in the British Diving National Cup in Southend.

It gave the teenagers the chance to compete alongside notables such as Tom Daley and City of Leeds duo Jack Laugher and Rebecca Gallantree, as well as it being a qualification event for the World Cup and other international events.

Both girls were competing in the one-metre and three-metre springboard events against world champion Gallantree and her synchro partner and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Alicia Blagg, also a Leeds member.

Both Bradford girls put in creditable performances on the one metre to finish in 15th (Waxman) and 16th (Webb).

In the three-metre event, 17-year-old Webb showed her skills by recovering from an awkward take off to land her reverse two-and-a-half somersaults well before finishing off with a brilliant inward two-and-a-half somersaults that scored seven from the judges.

She finished in a fantastic 13th position, while Waxman, the youngest female in the competition at 13, showed her consistency in an event where others faltered around her to finish 12th, within reach of a final position.

She was showing her new dive – a reverse two-and-a-half somersaults – for the first time in competition and scored a solid set of sixes.

Their coach, Grace Alsancak, said: "Both girls have done brilliantly. They have shown they can mix it with the best divers in the country.

"With this being their first taste of an event at this level and them doing so well, it's exciting to see what the future holds.

"Everyone at the club is incredibly proud of the girls and what they achieved – to be selected to go to this event is an achievement in itself."

Both girls, and the rest of their team, will now focus their attention on the City of Leeds Divings G Star Championships at the end of February.

City of Bradford Esprit Diving Club works closely with Bradford Council's Aquatics Competitive Diving Training Scheme, and this partnership has, year on year, produced winners at all levels in the Junior National Championships.
