YOUTH did not hold goalkeeper Alexandra Rowe back, as she put in a stunning performance for St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College to help them reach the semi-finals of a national water polo tournament.

Rowe, who was the youngest player in the whole competition, made a series of key saves in all of her matches for the under-18s and constantly displayed command and bravery in her own area.

Her passing was also crucial in helping the team start attacks from the back and her efforts were recognised when she was made player of the tournament.

The youthful side from the Heaton-based school had to go up against several older and more experienced players in order to make it to the last four.

This should prove beneficial for next year, as their team will retain all of their players. After such a strong performance this time out, they are likely to be one of the favourites for the title.

Lauren Dixon, Harriet Walker and Matilda King are all in Year 12 and their experience will have proved vital for the younger members of the side.

Sara Steinberg, Niamh Dolan-Baines, Amelia Fullerton, Lydia King and Tamara Markey are all year nine students, while Rowe has not long started secondary school, as she is an year eight pupil.

Kesteven & Grantham Girls' School were the eventual winners of the competition.
