BRADFORD Speed Skating Club did not let the visitors take all of the glory when they staged their big re-launch meeting – the Kirkman Open – at Bradford Ice Arena.

Kyle Oliver and Jacob Mardell were first and second in the junior novice category, while Nicky Gawith and Michael Pensavalle were second and third in the senior novice section.

In addition, there were bronze medals for Joe Cotterill (Group One seniors and Masters men) and Thomas Mardell (Group Three junior E).

A total of 46 skaters took part, including nine British medallists – three who had won gold, two silver and four bronze.

The club was re-formed just over a year ago, and former Bradford Ice Arena director Krystyna Rogers said: "You have heard about the figure, dance and hockey elements of ice sport in Bradford, but the one thing that was missing for 30 years was the short track speed skating.

"Just a year ago, Bradford Ice Speed Skating Club was reborn after the 50-year celebrations on January 9.

"Groups of volunteers who were speed skaters in the past got together, and within weeks the club was formed again.

"Setting it up was complicated but it was achieved thanks to the sheer determination and passion of the new committee.

"The club already has 30 regular members who train every Monday, and some of them have already competed in national competitions after just one year's training.

"It was a great achievement to organise the first Kirkman Open and I wish to congratulate the competitors from Bradford and the visiting teams for doing so well in what is an exciting sport.

"Who knows – some of the competitors may be taking part in the next Winter Olympics."

Rogers added: "The ice rink has been a second home to me for 25 years, and my work has been motivated by pure dedication and passion for all of the ice sports.

"I was humbled when a trophy was donated in my name and I was invited to present it to the overall fastest female skater (Olivia Weedon)."
