BRADFORD Speed Skating Club have seven British medallists among an entry of almost 50 for the first race meeting of their newly-formed club tomorrow.

In a throwback to the high-octane action of the 1980s, there will be three national champions, two runners-up and two bronze medallists.

As well as ten local skaters, there will also be ladies who were second and ninth in a recent Masters International Short Track Games in Sheffield, all of which adds up to a good field.

Doors at Bradford Ice Rink will open at 3.45pm, and the meeting itself will begin about 15 minutes later once resurfacing of the ice has finished.

The afternoon will include about 40 races, which will be a mixture of individual races and team relays, with the Kirkman Trophy at stake in the latter.

This silverware takes its name from Lewis and Bessie Kirkman, who ran the club in the eighties and nineties, and it is hoped that family members will be available to present the trophy.

The meeting, which is the culmination of the reformation of the club 13 months ago, starts at 4pm and should finish at about 7.15pm, after which trophies will be presented upstairs in the Stars Suite.

Admission is free, and there will also be a cake and buns stall and a raffle.
