REBEKAH Tiler faces a head-to-head battle this weekend in her last chance to impress before the weightlifting team is named for this summer's Olympics in Rio.

Yet the 17-year-old world youth and European senior medalist from Denholme will not be facing her obvious rival in Zoe Smith at the Cybex British Championships on Saturday.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist is competing in the women's 63kg division at Coventry's Ricoh Arena, whereas Tiler is squaring up against 2016 English champion Emily Godley in the 69kg category.

However, Eddie Halstead – Tiler's trainer at Mytholmroyd Weightlifting Club – confirmed that realistically it is a straight battle between Tiler and Smith for the one women's place in Rio.

"Mercy Brown is the other contender but she is very much an outside bet, so it is pretty much between Rebekah and Zoe," said Halstead.

"Training has been going well for Rebekah, who lifted 99kg in the snatch and 125kg in the clean and jerk a fortnight ago in the British Youth Championships.

"However, she knows that she will have to lift weights that she has never attempted before in competition this weekend.

"She is aiming for a total of 230kg, whether that is 102kg and 128kg or 103kg and 127kg, and she must then hope that her total puts her ahead of Zoe in their respective world rankings.

"If Rebekah is eighth and Zoe tenth in the current world rankings, then it is likely that Rebekah will go to Rio, but if it is the other way around, then it is likely that Zoe will go. All I can say is that Rebekah is ready."

Tiler and Godley have not gone head to head since January at the English Championships, with Godley claiming first place in the 69kg category on bodyweight after both totalled 210kg.

The European Senior Championships were next up, where European junior champion Tiler won bronze in the women's 69kg category to secure vital qualification points for Team GB ahead of thie Olympic Games.

Godley battled through an elbow injury, which occurred during the competition, to finish sixth in the 63kg category.
