HAROLD Club brothers Anthony and Gareth Green overcame the challenge of Eccleshill Victoria Conservative Club duo Lewis Walsh and Howard Mawson to win the Bradford Snooker Championship pairs title for a fourth time.

The match at Great Horton Conservative Club saw the Greens open well with a solid first frame which saw them lead 71-0 with only 59 points remaining.

Walsh and Mawson fought back to the point where they only needed one snooker on the last red but fortune favoured their opponents – who managed to fluke the last red and take the frame 81-31, albeit deservedly so.

The second frame was a much closer affair and Walsh and Mawson could not quite pull clear enough and were punished when Gareth Green cleared the last three colours to steal it 57-44.

Anthony Green started well in frame three with a break of 33 but uncharacteristically missed the black, which enabled Walsh and Mawson to pull back into the contest.

Again the frame was tight before eventually being taken by the Greens 66-43 for a 3-0 victory and another pairs title.

Anthony Green also finished with the competition's highest break of 91, scored in the semi-finals.

The singles semi-finals take place next week, with Walsh facing pairs partner Mawson at Eccleshill Victoria Conservative Club on Wednesday.

The second tie is the following night at Great Horton Conservative Club between Kevin Firth of Undercliffe Cricket Club and Eccleshill Victoria Cons opponent Mark Ball, who currently holds the highest break of 131.

Both matches are the best of seven frames and will start at 7.30pm. Spectators are welcome at both venues.

* THERE was disappointment for Bradford duo Wayne Cooper and Simon Bedford in the Yorkshire Snooker Championship quarter-finals at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.

Four-time champion Cooper was drawn against 2009 winner Johnathon Bagley from Leeds, while Bedford played 2014 runner-up Peter Fisher of Castleford. Both matches went the distance but the Bradford pair were on the wrong end of 4-3 scorelines.

Brett Miller (Sheffield) made breaks of 93 and 111 in defeating Will Lemons (Sheffield) 4-0, while Ryan Walton of Leeds edged Danny Womersley (Castleford) 4-3. The semi-finals then saw Bagley beat Walton 4-0 and Fisher squeeze past Miller 4-3.

The final is provisionally scheduled for Friday, May 26 but will be confirmed in due course.

* THE South Bradford Summer League is due to start next month and the event is open to teams from other leagues.
