BRADFORD came away with a shock 4-3 win at defending champions Leeds in the Yorkshire Inter-District Billiards League.

Bob Patterson of Leeds and Paul Devitt traded 20-plus breaks throughout in a tight game but a bit of luck at the end saw the Bradford potter home 200-197.

County player Jonathan Bagley fired in breaks of 37, 33 and 35 to beat Steve Wilman 200-122 before Bradford captain Stephen Kershaw started with a 45 to pull some of the 75 aggregate back and led Dave Barker 98-16.

Barker got his potting game going but at 172-92 it still looked like Bradford might manage a 5-2 victory.

However, breaks of 28 and 40 got Barker back into it and Kershaw was happy to get over the line 200-189 for a 4-3 scoreline against a Leeds team who had not dropped a point in their first two matches.

Kershaw and Devitt are in action again at Cue Gardens on Sunday in the regional qualifying competition for the Grand Masters. The event starts at 11am and matches are 90 minutes long.

Meanwhile, defending snooker champions Bradford No 1 got their Division One season back on track after a recent home defeat to Sheffield No 3 and now lead the table after a hard-fought 6-0 victory at Castleford No 2.

The final score did not reflect the match, with several of the frames being tight.

Wayne Cooper won his opener easily but the second was a lot closer, with opponent James Pearson making the Bradford potter work hard for his success.

Captain Kevin Firth started with a 30 break, Micky Hodgson replying with a 42. After a lengthy safety battle and numerous fouls and misses, the frame went to a black-ball game, which Firth picked off to win by a staggering score of 92-85. He then won a scrappy fourth as well.

Lewis Walsh stepped into the side for the unavailable Mark Slater and showed no sign of nerves against classy Castleford captain Pete Raby.

Walsh played the percentages well and edged both frames, the first with a superb length-of-the-table pot on the blue.

Bradford No 2 travelled to Huddersfield and were on the wrong end of a 4-2 result, luck being against them on this occasion.

Gareth Green shared frames with Conrad Norcliffe, a 40 break being the highlight for Green, while captain Hanif Rafiq lost two close frames against Rob Armitage.

Anthony Green set off with a first-frame win over Michael Whaley but a final black-ball game went against the Bradford team as Green miscued with the ball over the pocket to gift Huddersfield the win.
