BRADFORD'S Jacob Barnett warmed up for the World University Games in August by taking taekwondo gold at the Austrian Open in Innsbruck.

It was the 20-year-old's first outing since he became a member of the GB Academy earlier this year in Manchester and the Leeds Beckett University student from Baildon did not disappoint.

Barnett defeated Romanian opponent Andrei Rotaru to win the -68kg division on golden point.

In earlier rounds, he beat Taiwan's Hsien-Wei Lin 20-16, Austria's Sandro Peer 7-3 and Britain's Dereece Williams, a former kickboxer from Wolverhampton, 15-8.

Fellow GB Fighting Chance programme members Williams and Falkirk's Hassan Haider (-58kg) both won bronze medals, although there was no podium place for 18-year-old Luke Jones, younger brother of double Olympic champion Jade.

Jones enjoyed an encouraging start, defeating Switzerland's Anusanth Sangaran 21-5, before a gutsy 23-22 defeat against Holland's experienced 24-year-old Giorgio Janmaat.

North east teenager Simone Abley won gold in the -68kg junior event.
