SIMON Rothery has overcome illness to land a top award for judo.

The 37-year-old, who grew up in Bradford but now lives in Aberford near Leeds, attends judo classes at York Railway Institute Judo Club once a fortnight.

Having started practising the sport aged eight, Simon was initially forced to stop due to an illness which led to excessive fluid on the brain.

However, the judoka has battled back to show his Kata skills after gaining medical permission to take up the sport again.

He has won the award in just two years after using his local library to help learn new techniques.

A delighted Simon said: “I am very proud to achieve this award – I have worked really hard.”

His mother Katherine added: “Simon was heartbroken when he had to stop doing what he loved due to his illness.

“We are so delighted and proud of him. We want to set an example to other people with difficulties.”
