HORIZON Taekwondo Academy members picked up one gold medal, six silvers and four bronzes in sparring contests at the Dome Open in Doncaster.

The format meant that athletes weighed in to be entered into various categories before competing in knockout competition, and the gold medal was won by 14-year-old Hannah Perry from Bradford.

She defeated Danielle Lomozik from Team Ultimate (Doncaster) – an opponent she lost to at the NTC Open (Nottingham) earlier this year – in the final of her +68kg junior category.

Among the silver medal winners were Jamie Kidd, from Silsden, Ellie Bowden (Cullingworth) and Lauren Watson and Matthew Brindle (Bradford).

Jamie, 13, defeated 2013 national champion Alex Sanderson from Team Ultimate (Doncaster) in the semi-final of the -49kg Cadet category before losing 5-4 to Sanderson's clubmate and Great Britain team-mate Owen Turner.

Ellie, 14, narrowly lost 5-4 in the final of her -52kg junior group against Great Britain team-mate Kristina Lees (Liverpool Elite), while 13-year-old Lauren gave away over a foot in height against her opponent in the final of her -37kg Cadet group.

She faced Aaliyah Powell of Sasan Taekwondo Club (Huddersfield).

Aaliyah is representing Great Britain in the Cadet World Championships in Korea next month.

Matthew, 14, defeated Jack Adamsons, of Northern Ireland's national team, 15-7 in the semi-final of his junior -59kg group.

Greengates' Gary Watt, 13, was moved up to the +65kg Cadet group and had to concede an additional half-bodyweight against Hamzeh Ramezani of Premier Taekwondo (Huddersfield), losing 11-7 after three fierce rounds on his way to bronze.

Master Rick Simpson said: “We’ve had a great year so far. We’ve prepared our athletes for these tournaments well too, taking them to a competition in Belgium in January, and tournaments in Nottingham, Barnsley and Durham too, as well as countless test match-days at our gym."

Other silver medallists were: Jason Perry (Bradford) and Lucas Degregorio (Ilkley), while Cara Harbourne (Keighley), Zak Spencer (Baildon) and Charlotte Banks (Silsden) won bronzes and Bradford's Carlos Tarrobal and Thomas Henley were quarter-finalists.
