With a surname like Vanzie, you’ve got plenty to live up to in the boxing ring.

But Bradford’s Ashley Vanzie, younger brother of former British lightweight king Bobby, hopes to add another title to the family collection.

The 22-year-old is through to the northern finals of the ABAE Elite Championships in the north-east tomorrow night.

Light-heavyweight Vanzie, who boxes for Cleckheaton ABC, is likely to face a familiar foe in Macclesfield’s Peter Bebbington. The pair have sparred together before.

Vanzie progressed to the Newbiggin showdown after victories over three successive weekends.

He saved his most impressive performance for the area semi-finals with a 23-13 win over Army opponent John Pontone.

Level at 5-5 after the first round, Vanzie took control in the second to move six points clear before taking the last by another four.

Cleckheaton coach Keith Tate said: “Ashley’s a good thinking boxer. He’s a mover and has good footwork for such a big man.

“Some of these lads you talk to and they don’t understand. But you can talk boxing with him and he takes everything on board.”

Bobby Vanzie, who also challenged unsuccessfully for the European belt, quit the sport when he became a Jehovah’s Witness. But he has been to the gym to watch his brother in sparring.

Tate added: “Ashley brought him along a few weeks ago and you could see he was quite impressed.”
