BRADFORD College boxer Harris Akbar has added another belt to his growing haul with victory at the England Boxing elite national championships.

The 18-year-old triumphed in the 69kg category at the tournament in Rotherham and was also named best boxer of the tournament.

The teenage student took the title with a unanimous points victory over third seed Joe Laws.

Akbar’s latest victory comes hot on the heels of being included in the Great Britain Boxing podium potential squad, which means he trains with national coaches at the Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Akbar, from Great Horton, fights for the Bradford Police and College Boxing Club based at Bradford College’s Trinity Green site on Easby Road, where he is coached by Mally McIver.

He made it through to the final at Rotherham’s Magna Centre by beating second seed William Le Poullain.

Fellow Bradford College student Jade Ashmore had her hopes of a title dashed at the semi-final stage, where she was defeated by Carly Skelly in the 51kg category.

Meanwhile, former Bradford College student Muhammad Ali helped the British Lionhearts end the regular season of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) in style with a 4-1 win over the Morocco Atlas Lions in Casablanca on Friday night.

The win ensured the Lionhearts finished the regular season top of Group B with five wins and a single loss and go into the last eight of the competition. Ali, from Keighley, is unbeaten in the competition with three wins out of three.
